Here’s today’s announcement

Carusi Announces Bid for Madison School Board cris

Cris Carusi announced today that she is running for Seat 6 on the Madison School Board. The mother of two students in the district, Carusi will bring experience and dedication to the board, serving as a strong advocate for public education.

“The writing is on the wall,” said Carusi. “Our public schools are going to be under increasing attack, and the board will have serious issues to tackle in the near future.
We need school board members who will spend time in our schools and go the extra mile to fight for public education at every level—district, state and federal.”

Carusi, whose children attend Jefferson Middle School and Memorial High School, is an active PTO member and school volunteer. She serves on the district’s Guiding Coalition on Equitable Behavior and Discipline, and is a familiar face at district and school board meetings. She has also run school fundraisers, organized a farm to school snack program and tutored students in literacy, among other volunteer roles.

“I’m in tune with our schools and I understand the issues facing public education, from the classroom to the capitol,” said Carusi. “I’m ready to hit the ground running.”

As a school board member, Carusi would seek broad, meaningful engagement in district program and funding decisions. She would work to create smaller class sizes to address achievement gaps, behavior issues and the needs of a diverse student population. She would address staff attrition and advocate for changes to attract and keep top teaching talent in the district.

Carusi supports a well-rounded curriculum that provides diverse exposure to the humanities, fine arts, civics and world languages.

“Public education is essential for a healthy democracy,” said Carusi. “Our schools need to prepare students for citizenship, as well as college and career. As a school board member, I will not only work to protect public education, but also to ready our youth for the sometimes difficult work of democracy.”

In addition to her work in schools, Carusi is also active in the community, volunteering as a Girl Scout leader and a coach with the Westside Track Club. She served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Nepal, where she cultivated a passion for cross-cultural exchange and understanding.
