At least there was a public process for this, people got to testify and a committee, not a king, made the decision.
In July, Metro Transit and the City of Madison Transit and Parking Commission held a public hearing to discuss removing the bus shelter located at the top of State Street at West Mifflin Street. Following the public hearing, it was decided to move forward with the removal of the bus shelter and stop.
This stop will be closed starting Tuesday, August 18. Work to remove the shelter will start on Tuesday, August 18 and is expected to be completed on Wednesday, August 19.
Starting on Tuesday, passengers should board around the corner on North Carroll Street at West Mifflin Street (Stop ID #1324) on the Capitol Square.
Metro’s fall Ride Guide and System Map will be updated with this change.

Although I don’t agree with the original reason proposed for moving this stop — to deal with “problems” at that corner — I can actually feel this will work better for transit and other modes using State St. Stopping at the top of State St when there is a green light is very inefficient. As a bicyclist, getting stuck behind a bus stopping there is a huge pain. The stop on Carroll St will probably work better for everyone.
