Traffic Nightmares for Memorial Day Weekend

Yeah, that’s not news . . . but there is a marathon going through town on Sunday that will be snarling up traffic, not only on the roads, but the bike paths too. Here’s the details.

This year’s Madison Marathon will be snarling up traffic. A link to the map is here:  http://www.madisonfestivals.com/marathon/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/Race-Packet.pdf

Traffic delays and road closures will affect the following areas:

  • University Ave. through the UW campus
  • W. Washington Ave.
  • Gorham St.
  • Williamson St. between Baldwin and First
  • E. Johnson from Fordham Ave. to Baldwin
  • Northshore Dr.
  • Proudfit St.
  • Broom St.
  • Bassett St

They have a map of areas to avoid: http://www.madisonfestivals.com/marathon/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/2011Traffic_Patterns.pdf

Here’s the bike info:

To Whom It May Concern:

I am the operations director for the Madison Marathon coming up this Sunday, May 29th. The marathon staff has been working to get the word out about streets the race will use Sunday from 7am-1pm. Wondering if there is a way you can help us get out the word that the Madison Marathon will utilize the Capitol City Trail from Machinery Row Bikes to Olin-Turville Ct. There will be heavy runner traffic during periods of the morning and we ask that bicycles avoid this
stretch of the path during this time for safety reasons. Volunteers will be on hand to direct traffic, but we advise avoiding this area. Please let me know if you have any suggestions for ways to reach Madison cyclists. Would appreciate any help you can provide.

Thank you!

Jody Stolldorf
Director of Operations
