What is the Purpose of these Tavern Dress Codes?

I’ve heard about them . . . now you can see them! (without going to these bars that most of my readers would never go to!) Yeah, I sacrificed my Thursday night and took a field trip! There are probably many more out there, but there are only so many bars you can go to in a night. If you happen so see one of these signs when you are out an about, please snap a photo and send it to me!

Here’s what it says . . .

– No white tees.
– No excessively baggy or long clothes (shirts must stop at about elbow level, shorts must not hang below the knees)
– No sagged pants or shorts (must cover your underwear/Above your ass).
– Hats straight forward or back
– No jerseys except on game days
– No cutoff shirts or tank tops
– No do-rags, bandanas or beanies

Dress code strictly enforced at management discretion. Any attire not listed that the management finds inappropriate will not be permitted in Wandos.

Wandos will not accept identification cards as a valid form of ID.

Any other identification form is at management discretion.

This one is from the Whiskey River (formerly the Pub for those of you who haven’t been out on State St. lately!)

Dress Code
NO Long Oversized Shirts.
NO Plain White T-shirts
NO 3/4 length Pants or Shorts
ALL Hats Must be worn Forward or Backwards (no tilting).
NO Long or Oversized Jewelry
NO Bandanas or Dew-Rags
Adjustments to Wardrobe NOT allowed.

Dress code subject to change without notice.

We reserve the right to refuse service to any person at any time.

Like I said, these are just two examples. The dress codes were NOT enforced on a Thursday night . . . but they basically just make up the rules as they want to as the signs pretty much say. I like the “subject to change without notice” and “strictly enforced at management discretion” language. Like I said, they do whatever they want and apply the rules to whomever they want to apply them to.

  1. What is a “dew-rag”? Related to Mountain Dew and extreme sports? Something worn by meteorologists who camp out under the stars? I know what a “do-rag” is, but I had never heard if the other sort.

If you’re going to discriminate, I say, at least be literate about it!
