Heidi Wegleitner announces she is running to replace County Board Supervisor Barbara Vedder and filed late last week. Vedder announced her retirement earlier this month. Several others are also running in other districts, see more below.
WEGLEITNER RUNNING
Heidi Wegleitner Announces Candidacy for County Board, District 2Heidi Wegleitner filed papers on Friday to become a candidate for County Board Supervisor in District 2, the seat now held by Supervisor Barbara Vedder, who is not seeking re-election. In filing her papers, Heidi had this to say:
I’m running to be a voice for the single mom and her disabled child who are sleeping in their car tonight in the bitter cold and others struggling in this economy. I will work tirelessly to support solutions and fund programs to help every Dane County resident meet their basic needs and achieve their full potential. Dane County’s quality programs and policies have been attacked by the state and federal government that take from the poor to give to the rich. We need a government that works for all people, not just the privileged few. I see the face of suffering every day and I know that we must–and we can– do better to address the growing poverty rate in Dane County.
Wegleitner has already been endorsed by County Board Supervisors John Hendrick, Al Matano, and Carousel Bayrd. She has also been endorsed by City Council member Marsha Rummel and Brian Solomon and School Board Member Marj Passman as well as former elected officials Andy Heidt and Brenda Konkel.
Mary Anglim, a neighborhood resident and supporter says “Heidi brings a whole-hearted commitment to opportunity, fairness, and assurance of basic needs for everyone in our community. Her work ethic and command of the facts are awesome and her cheerful personality will contribute to the County Board’s smooth functioning.”
Heidi and her husband, P.T., an urban farmer, make their home in the Emerson East neighborhood. Professionally and as a volunteer Heidi has worked tirelessly to improve our community and make sure that all residents are treated fairly and with respect.
Heidi is currently a Steering Committee member of the Emerson East Neighborhood Association and serves as the Housing Task Force Chair for Progressive Dane. She is also the current Board President of the Tenant Resource Center, and is a member of the Madison Affordable Housing Action Alliance and Labor Forward.
Heidi is an attorney for Legal Action of Wisconsin. For the past six years she has been representing low income tenants in eviction cases and subsidized housing disputes in the Madison area. She is bargaining unit co-chair for the United Legal Workers (which represents workers at Legal Action of Wisconsin, Inc.’s Madison office, and is affiliated with the National Organization of Legal Services Workers, UAW 2320). Heidi also serves on the Board of the Public Interest Law Section of the State Bar of Wisconsin and the Madison Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild.
Heidi received her B.A. from UW-Madison in 2001, where she played four years of varsity women’s soccer, double majored in Political Science and Women’s Studies, and obtained a certificate in American Indian Studies. Heidi received her J.D. from the University of St. Thomas School of Law in 2005 where she won the Dean’s Award for Jurisprudence and represented immigrants in removal proceedings as a clinical legal services student.
