If you’ve never driven up behind the Human Services Building at 1202 Northport you may have never seen this building. And you probably don’t realize the the county has been letting it sit there and rot for years. And now, will they say that because they haven’t taken care of it that it has to be torn down?

Lake View Hill Park
Nurses’ Dorm Progress Meeting

Hosted by
Dane County Parks and Department of Human Services

A public information meeting to discuss the next steps for the former Nurses’ Dorm at Lake View Hill County Park will be held on Wednesday, July 10th at 7:00 p.m. at the Dane County Department of Human Services office building in Room 110, 1202 Northport Drive, Madison, WI 53704.

Dane County contracted with Urban Assets in 2012 to help determine the future of the nurses’ dorm and evaluate possible reuse of the building, which has been vacant for a number of years. Urban Assets will give an overview of their research results and recommendations for the nurses’ dorm. Dane County staff will give an update on the status of the building and share their vision for the site.

The nurses’ dorm is a three-story 19,260 sq. ft. building that is one of the contributing buildings on the Register of Historic Places listing for the site. The building was constructed in 1934. It housed the doctors and nurses that worked at the Lake View Sanatorium (currently the main Human Services office building). After the Lake View Sanatorium closed in 1966, the nurses’ dorm was initially used as office space for the Dane County Human Services Department. By the 1990’s it was no longer occupied; since that time it has only been used for temporary storage of files and office furniture.

For further information about the meeting, please contact Darren Marsh (Dane County Parks Director) at marsh@countyofdane.com or (608) 224-3766.
