I’m not sure why this press release came out Friday, but on June 20th the County Board passed a requirement that all candidates for county offices file their campaign finance reports electronically. Sigh . . . its about freaking time! Now we can read them! City? Pretty please. It could save time double checking the math on all those reports . . .

Clerk Offers Assistance in Electronic Filings

All candidates for public office must now file their campaign finance reports electronically within seven days of the filing deadline, after the County Board of Supervisors approved the requirement at its June 20 meeting.

“It’s important that County staff not spend their time on data entry,” said County Clerk Scott McDonell. “Electronic filing also makes campaign finance information available to voters more quickly and easily. Many candidates file electronically already, so it shouldn’t be too difficult.”

Electronic filing involves little more than filling in a spreadsheet and emailing it to the clerk, McDonell said. The spreadsheet is available for download at http://www.countyofdane.com/clerk .

McDonell and the Board recognized that some people still may have difficulty operating computers.

“I will personally help anyone who needs help with that,” said McDonell. “You can still file on paper on the deadline. You just have to get the electronic version in within seven days.”

The requirement calls for “all campaign finance reports required by state law” be filed electronically.
