Now if you lose something that has an aggregate value of $50 (not just per item) or of sentimental or legal value (driver’s license, birth certificate, social security card), the city employees can’t throw it out for 45 days (instead of 30). Some improvement. Council will be voting on this on Tuesday.
Here is the redlined version of the ordinance, so you can see the changes.
Overall, they are an improvement in that they:
– Have an aggregate value of $50, not per item
– They make and exception to the $50 limit for sentimental or legal value
– The procedure will be city-wide instead of department by department
– There will be an electronic log of the lost property and you can get info on lost property at the City-County Building
– Changes the time they have to keep the property from 30 to 45 days.
I’d still like to see them keep the property for 90 days and lower the value to $25. Many departments are tagging the property before they take it and I would like to see that be part of it as well. Medication should be protected. Oh, hell, I support everything the Homeless Issues Committee added – Here’s the list of items the Homeless Issues Committee asked for. I think there’s still quite a bit of work to be done.
