Hippie Christmas! Garbage picked up daily downtown, but please, please, please, please, please don;t dump your stuff on our streets. It’s one of the annoying things about living downtown.
This was written yesterday from alder Mike Verveer.
It is time for the annual downtown move out and there are many items for movers and others to consider. Activity is expected to begin today and peak on Thursday, August 14 when most campus area renters have to be out of their apartments as their mid-August leases end.
Residents in the downtown area who have their refuse and recycling collected on Thursdays by the Madison Streets Division can put their carts at the curb starting today, Monday, August 11. Crews from the Streets Division will be able to empty them so residents can use them again and again during the move out. The refuse and recycling carts will be emptied every day (sometimes several times each day) and residents can continue to fill them up every day from August 11 through August 15. The Streets Division will begin collecting material as early as 3:00 a.m. some days this week depending on the workload.
In order to make the removal of trash and recyclables easier for collection crews residents are asked to follow these simple guidelines:
ยท Do not put trash in cardboard boxes.
Boxes must be flattened and placed in the green recycling carts or bundled for recycling.
Keep refuse and recycling separate when placed at the curb. Do not pile trash or large items around the refuse or recycling carts.
Do not place trash in recycling carts.
Put all refuse at the curb in the tan refuse carts or trash bags.
No loose piles of trash/garbage.
Do not pile trash or recyclables on top of furniture or appliances.
Keep larger metal items separate from other material so that it can be recycled.
Most appliances, including microwaves, TV’s, and computer monitors require a fee.Donation Stations
In an effort to reduce landfill waste and increase community benefit, the City of Madison is again partnering with the UW-Madison WE CONSERVE program and Office of Sustainability, Goodwill Industries, Society of St. Vincent de Paul and student organization REthink Wisconsin to collect and donate reusable items.
UW-Madison is again hosting “Donate and Take” sites where people can drop off usable goods or browse the donations for wanted items. St. Vincent de Paul and Goodwill donation centers will also be set up August 11-14 at two campus-area parking lots and several downtown apartment buildings. Sites within apartment buildings are accessible only to building residents.
Most clean and usable items will be accepted, including clothing, shoes, books, household items, small appliances and nonperishable food. Unacceptable items include mattresses, box springs, futons, TVs and large appliances. Locations and hours for all sites are listed below – or call (608) 501-7200 to schedule a pickup during moving days.
An e-waste recycling site will be set up in UW-Madison Lot 51 to accept working and nonworking electronics. Most items with a cord or batteries can be accepted, including computers, monitors, phones, small appliances and game systems. Unfortunately, TVs cannot be accepted.
