Bus stops are finally closing on the Isthmus. After years of trying, it finally happened. Now if you don’t like it, you should give input! . . . ?
This is an issue that has been talked about for 10 years or more, here’s what I wrote in 2009. And here. I apparently wasn’t paying attention or got worn down and didn’t notice this latest attempt, but apparently the finally won.
However! They say they are seeking feedback on the change!
Bus Stop Updates on Gorham St. and Johnson St.
One of the biggest customer complaints to Metro Transit is that due to overcrowding, buses have trouble maintaining their schedules, especially in the Isthmus area. As a result, riders are not able to make their connections at transfer points.
In 2013, a Transit Development Plan was adopted that recommended to implement a stop consolidation program to remove or relocate excessive bus stops in central Madison.
In a meeting on March 12, 2014, the Madison Transit and Parking Commission approved the first efforts to implement this type of program in the Gorham and Johnson streets area.

Currently, on Johnson and Gorham streets, bus stops are spaced approximately one block (approximately 1/8 of a mile) apart.
With Metro’s ever-increasing ridership, more and more people are boarding and exiting the bus, which causes delays at each stop. Each delay causes the bus to get further and further behind to the point it can no longer make connections at the end of the route.
With service changes in effect on Sunday, August 24, Metro plans to remove three stops on Gorham St. at intersections of Livingston, Brearly, and Few streets. This leaves a bus stop location on every other block.
Passengers will need to board at alternate stop locations on Blount, Patterson, and Ingersoll streets, which is an additional 1/8 mile from removed stops.
Removing these stops are expected to make travel times faster and more reliable while limiting missed connections at transfer points.

Though, the removal of these stops has gone through a long-term planning process with various approvals by the Madison Transit and Parking Commission and Madison City Council, Metro Transit staff are aware that these relocations may cause concerns.
Passengers are encouraged to give their feedback on this change. Staff will review all passenger feedback and observe how this change will affect buses moving through the area starting on Sunday.
Based on feedback and observations on these relocations, changes could be proposed at future Madison Transit and Parking Commission meetings.
