More Cut Backs to Homeless Storage!

Dang.

Sorry Jonathan . . . this used to be gorgeous copper cattails about 5 feet tall, a very beautiful bird feeder! Wish I could find a photo! (I know I have one . . . somewhere . . . )

As of 9/12, storage hours will be reduced to M – F 8am – 11am (meaning: we are no longer able to provide weekend and evening hours)

The temporary storage program for homeless persons at Social Justice Center (SJC) is ending on 10/15/14

All folks using the storage are being advised to find alternative storage and/or are being referred to St Vincent’s lockers

Sadly, vandalism that can be attributed to someone(s) using storage has occurred at the SJC, resulting in the irreplaceable destruction of three pieces of art within the SJC gallery and building. Shine will not ask SJC to consider extending our lease and is not reaching out to the City (who has been covering the rent from Feb – Oct) nor County (who gave $2500 to this program, for supplies) for additional funding to extend the program at the SJC

Shine completely agrees that homeless storage is essential (see: Providing Free Storage Could Be Key To Ending Homelessness) but without funding/support to staff this and train all volunteers on our models of intervention this program was not sustainable.

Shine wants to acknowledge the heroic efforts of Sanctuary (a group comprised of homeless or formerly homeless persons) who have been running the storage for these many months, especially the contribution and leadership of Ronnie Barbett. Ronnie gave more than 2000 hours of volunteer service to provide this needed resource and is my personal hero

Thanks
Sarah Gillmore
