This was sent by Marsha Rummel to her neighborhood listserves, it was so good I thought I’d pass it along.
As you may know, the City is developing a business plan and design for the Madison Public Market District. The project is planned to be located in the area around East Washington Ave, 1st Street, and Johnson Street. The first phase of the Public Market District will likely involve retrofitting the City’s Fleet Services building at 1st and Johnson to create a multi-purpose market facility. The long range vision is that this facility will catalyze additional investment in food related facilities and businesses in this area.
The City’s Local Food Committee and the consulting team assisting with the initiative are in the final phases of creating a draft business plan and physical design for the project. As this draft is completed over the next few months, there will be a series of additional public meetings to give community members the opportunity to review the plans and share their own ideas.
If you’re interested in this project and want to know about ways to get involved, the best way to stay informed is to sign up for the project’s email list. You can do that by going to www.cityofmadison.com/publicmarket and entering your email address in the “subscribe” box on the lower right.
As part of the City’s Racial Equity and Social Justice (RESJ) initiative, the City is conducting an Equity Analysis to evaluate how future decisions about the Public Market District can have a positive impact on communities of color and lower-income populations in Madison. This survey is intended to gather input from all community members on this topic and the results will help guide next steps. The survey should take about 10 minutes.
We are getting ready to send out the survey soon and would like to match the turnout for the last survey the city conducted for the Public Market District which was the highest, ever! Please sign up if you haven’t already and you will be notified when the survey is live. Please share this email with your networks, friends and neighbors.
If you have any specific questions right now, don’t hesitate to contact the City’s project manager for the Public Market Project – Dan Kennelly, dkennelly@cityofmadison.com, 608-217-7470.
On behalf of the Local Food Committee – thank you.
