Hey, Why Didn’t My County Board Supervisor Get Any Committee Appointments!?!

Because for a change, Dane County Executive Joe Parisi is being transparent . . . In addition to Heidi Wegleitner, John Hendrick didn’t get any either. Oddly Jeremy Levin and Jeff Pertl didn’t either. Neither did Robin Schmidt or Mike Willett. How’d your supervisor do? To some extent, not being on committees is an ok thing . . . since the committees are understaffed, ignored and constantly told they are “just advisory” – i.e. your opinion doesn’t really matter.

Some people got appointed to committees they didn’t want, others didn’t get appointed at all. What’s up with this Joe Parisi?

From last Monday from the county board staff, prior to the appointments coming out:

All,

Chair Corrigan asked me to remind members of the County Board that you continue to serve on boards and commissions until replaced (except for those who are no longer members of the County Board). Josh Wescott has indicated that the County Executive’s appointment resolution will be submitted on June 16th. Please continue to attend board and commission meetings until this resolution with new committee assignments is approved later this summer.

The County Exec’s Office reports that there are several boards and commissions for which no County Board members expressed an interest. If you have an interest in serving on one of these bodies, please contact Josh as soon as possible at Wescott@countyofdane.com. If you need additional information about the duties of each body, please see Chapter 15 of the Dane County Code of Ordinances: https://danedocs.countyofdane.com/webdocs/pdf/ordinances/ord015.pdf

From County Board Chair Sharon Corrigan – last Thursday, explaining what to do if you got appointed to a committee you didn’t want.

Supervisors:

Subsequent to the County Executive’s appointment memo, a number of questions have arisen regarding upcoming meetings of commissions, committees and boards. Please remember that as we consider these new appointments you continue to serve on your current committees until replaced.

Also, I have heard from some Supervisors who were appointed to committees to which they did not request appointment or to more committees than they are prepared to handle. Please let me know if you wish to decline an appointment so that we can communicate that list to the County Executive.

Thanks,
Sharon Corrigan

  1. Actually, there is a larger pattern that may answer your question. It appears that the County Executive wants to send a message to the legislative branch by penalizing county board leaders. Sup. Wegleitner is clearly a respected county board leader on issues of housing and homelessness. Now let’s look at other supervisors with zero or one appointments.

  2. County Board leaders with zero or one appointments:
    Sharon Corrigan, Chair
    Jeff Pertl, 1st Vice Chair
    Shelia Stubbs, 2nd Vice Chair
    John Hendrick, past board chair
    Carousel Bayrd, past vice chair
    Jenni Dye, P&F chair
    Jeremy Levin, HHN chair
    Patrick Miles, past ZLR chair
    Robin Schmidt, past PWT chair
