Well, this is disturbing, not surprising if you think about it, but disturbing none-the-less.
If you think that Wisconsin is progressive on the issue of racial incarceration disparities, please click here to read a new YGB article entitled, “32 of Wisconsin’s 56 Black Neighborhoods Are Jails.”
That’s right: there are 56 regions in Wisconsin that are majority-Black, and 32 of these 56 are jails, prisons, or correctional centers. On top of this, 22 of the 56 are low income neighborhoods and homeless shelters.
But it gets even worse. While Wisconsin’s general population is 6 to 7% Black, Wisconsin’s jails are 41% Black (49% in Madison). In fact, 1 in every 8 Black men in Wisconsin is locked up behind bars.
The article provides clear and undeniable proof of the systemic racism that runs rampant in our police and incarceration systems, and the need for community control over the police, decriminalization of drugs and poverty, and the reinvestment of police funding towards poverty and mental health services.
