Supv. de Felice retires from County Board “It’s been an honor to serve”
MADISON – Dane County Supv. Dave de Felice announced today that he is retiring from the Board of Supervisors.
“It’s been an honor to serve constituents on the far east side of Madison and the Town of Blooming Grove.” The retirement is health related and effective immediately.
“Despite back surgery in November, health issues remain a consideration. It’s best for me and my constituents to make this decision now.”Supv. de Felice was elected in 2004 emerging as the leader among three candidates, winning 64 percent of the vote in the general election. As an active member of the community, he helped form a neighborhood association, worked with city officials to bring a park to the neighborhood, and volunteered for civic groups. As a County Board supervisor, he authored the HomE Loan Program, (HELP), which provides low-interest reverse mortgage loans to qualifying applicants.
A self-described “Liberal who hates taxes,” de Felice was a critic of excessive and unnecessary government spending, recently awarding a “Golden Felice (fleece)” for spending on solar lights at the Zoo, which closes to the public at 5 p.m.
“My purpose was to save scarce taxpayer dollars and to give constituents confidence that their government was operating efficiently and effectively.”
While a critic of questionable spending, de Felice was a staunch supporter of social programs and services, including funding for suicide prevention, mental health and efforts to help the homeless. He also served as a voice for the powerless, leading the fight against excessive fees the county charged inmates to make phone calls from the county jail, and he was an outspoken advocate for animal rights.As a former union member, de Felice supported working men and women and their right to bargain collectively. A strong advocate for the environment, de Felice backed prohibitions against phosphorous in law fertilizer and efforts to maintain clean lakes and streams and conserve land for county parks and natural areas for future generations.
“During my 13 years in office, my top priority has been maintaining the unique quality of life in Dane County. Those who live here are fortunate to have many dedicated elected officials and employees in local government. It has been my privilege to serve among them.”
