The Last Open House at The Historic Anderberg House, ‘Big Pink’ at Drumlin Farm
Tues, Sept 8, 3-6 pm 2849 Oregon Road, Fitchburg
Visit the last open house at the historic Anderberg House, or ‘Big Pink’ at Drumlin Community Garden. It’s open between 3 and 6 p.m, Tuesday, Sept. 8. Join in the potluck and bonfire later.
The Albert Anderberg House reflects the growth of a Fitchburg farm family and embodies their Swedish heritage, a rarity in this part of the State. The house is significant for its Arts and Crafts interior architecture and art: half-timber-and-plaster living room walls and ceiling, unusual fireplace mantel, hand-painted wall and ceiling borders, and artistic paintings — vignettes of Albert Anderberg’s recollections of his home in Sweden. Finely detailed oak stair rail, plate rails, leaded glass windows and china cabinet were all made by Albert Anderberg and his family. The stucco, concrete and wood shingle exterior was built to resemble their old Swedish home.
The future of the house is uncertain, since demolition has been proposed, so it’s a chance for the community to see the interior of the 1908 house, since it will be closed after September 8. Subsequently, the lease on the gardens will expire on September 30.
Photographers are strongly encouraged to visit the house and the Drumlin Community Garden surrounding it. Photography and public awareness may help draw a new owner and encourage preservation.
The event is free and open to the public. Parking is available along Oregon Road. Accessible parking is at the top of the wooded gravel drive. FMI: 286-1844.
