Help Complete “Loved & Missed Everyday” Mural
The mural on the rear of the Social Justice Center at 1202 Williamson Street depicting young people who died tragically too young has a TITLE and is ready to be completed! The artists who have worked with families and loved ones need your help to buy the materials needed to finish the mosaic work and install a written guide that will tell the story of the mural. Your support in getting this important Madison landmark mural finished means so much to the artists and families involved.

Public Housing Openings – Sun Prairie

WI Management will be opening the wait list for public housing units in Sun Prairie. They are 2, 3, 4, and 5 bedroom duplexes, applicants need to be at or below 50% AMI and rent is 30% of income. Applicants can call WMC at 608-258-2080 to request an application or stop in their office to fill one out at 4801 Tradewinds Parkway, Madison.
Tonight – Mendota Juvenile Treatment Center Expansion Meeting
Please join me on Monday, August 19, 2019 at 6:30pm for a neighborhood meeting where we will hear about a proposal to expand the Mendota Juvenile Treatment Center (MJTC) at Mendota Mental Health Institute (MMHI), 301 Troy Drive. The meeting will be held at the Conference Center on MMHI grounds. Parking is available at a lot on Service Road in the center of the campus.
The proposed project would expand the existing 24,700 square foot MJTC by constructing 77,850 square feet of additions. The current facility houses 29 juvenile boys. The new facility would add two units for 30 boys and two units for 20 girls. The project would also expand on-site surface parking and on-site exterior recreation yards. The developer and City staff will be present to provide information and answer questions.
Home Rain Garden Tours
Meet at 620 S. Thornton Ave. at 2PM and walk about a half mile up Morrison St. to the 1300 block.
You’ll see multiple examples of home rain gardens and learn about site selection, installation, and maintenance of the rain gardens.?? You will also learn about how rain gardens benefit the watershed and see how they can also provide pollinator habitat and add beauty.
Light refreshments will be provided at the final stop.

The Fair Housing Center of Greater Madison is offering a FREE fair housing training for owners and managers of rental housing:

Please join me for a neighborhood meeting about a proposal by Greenway Real Estate to redevelop the convenience store and gas station at 636 W. Washington Avenue. The new five-story mixed-use building would include two levels of underground parking and approximately 50 market-rate rental apartments consisting of a mix of studios, one- and two-bedrooms and a limited number of three-bedroom units. The project’s ground level will include a residential lobby and building amenities, including a ride-in bike storage area, and commercial office space. The site is zoned Urban Mixed Use and the proposal contemplates no change to the zoning or variance requests. Groundbreaking would occur in the spring of 2020 with completion in May 2021.

Law Park (Along the Lake in front of Monana Terrace) planning workshops

As you may be aware, the City of Madison Parks Division is developing a preliminary report for Law Park that will serve as a reference and guide for a future master plan process. The future master plan process will include a design competition which will engage designers from around the world to imagine, based on the community’s input, a future downtown waterfront park for Madison.
If you are unfamiliar, Law Park is a 4.7-acre park situated along the shore of Lake Monona. Current amenities in the park include a public boat launch, bench seating, public art, floating piers and a parking lot. The park is three blocks from the State Capitol and offers over 2,500 linear feet of shoreline access. Although the park provides a linear connection along the south edge of the Isthmus, the available green space is isolated from the greater downtown area and Capitol Square.
Urban Assets and EQT by Design are leading the public engagement process, which focuses on gathering input from a diverse range of Madison residents to outline goals for the master plan process, identify desired park improvements, and generate ideas to connect the waterfront park to the greater downtown area.
In order to help us conduct the most effective engagement process possible, could you please send this project information out to the community members within your neighborhood (and post on your neighborhood association website, if possible), encouraging them to visit the project website and also take community survey (links below)? We also invite the community to participate in any of the three workshops listed below, in order to share community needs, explore potential opportunities, and help determine what this downtown waterfront park can mean for the Greater Madison Community. Community input is key to this project’s success!

Vilas Park Focus Group Invitation
The City of Madison Parks Division has engaged a consulting team, led by MSA and including Urban Assets, to develop a master plan for Vilas Park. The Vilas Park Master Plan project includes a robust community engagement process designed to gather input from a diverse range of Madison residents. This community input will then inform the master plan design process, help to identify desired park improvements, and generate ideas to create a more enjoyable, welcoming, and accessible community park.
In order to ensure we receive input from all community members, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds, the public engagement consultant for this project, Urban Assets, is organizing community-focused small group meetings to provide feedback to the project team from a community perspective. We invite you to participate in one of these meetings; your input and participation would be invaluable to the project, as well as the Greater Madison Community!
