City of Madison Week Ahead – 3/2/20

A look at city meetings for the week of 3/2/20. Another council meeting this week, affordable housing fund review, dogs in parks, golf public input meeting, SSM Health, Judge Doyle Square and Public Market developments, Canopy liquor license, flood mitigation, Air BnB ordinance and more messed up agendas.

Another demonstration of why you need to look at both the clerk’s agenda and in legistar to figure out what meetings are happening this week.  I put the comments in orange this week so you can quickly scan to see the errors and inconsistencies.

• Approving plans and specifications and authorizing the Board of Public Works to advertise and receive bids for McKenna Boulevard Flood Mitigation Phase 2. (19th & 20th ADs) – Over the last four years, the Elver Park Greenway (see attached overview map) has overflowed City property four times. Most recently, on August 20, 2018, properties near the intersection of Schroeder Road and Struck Street flooded, which forced the evacuation of an assisted living facility trapped several people inside the Powless Tennis Center. City staff have modeled the Elver Park Greenway system and its contributing drainage area to evaluate factors contributing to flooding. The modeling shows that capacity of the system is limited by the shallow slope of the greenway and by undersized discharge pipes under Schroeder Road. As a response to the repeated flooding, the City has designed a public works project to increase the capacity of this system. Estimated Cost: $1,700,000.
