Early Morning Round Up

I’m sure to miss a few things this morning since I’m doing this so early . . . Work is so inconvenient on my blogging schedule!

TAX DAY MUSINGS
Check out what the State Journal has to say this morning:

Another study this week suggested nearly two-thirds of U.S. companies don’t pay federal income taxes.

Of course, in classic Wisconsin State Journal style, they focus on low and moderate income people and say they shouldn’t be complaining. They didn’t look at the tax breaks for the wealthy.

RECORD HIGH VOTER TURNOUT ON CAMPUS
Can someone please explain this to me, please. 262 people voted in the County Board Race in the 5th district, about 1 – 2%, but 13,000+ or 35% show up for ASM elections. I’ve heard some explanations, but seriously, this just sucks, what screwed up priorities.

THE SCONZ BUSTS ME
Heh, good one. I can’t hardly argue with him, except to say, I typed all the Brenda Brown testimony out of respect for the late Dr. Anthony Brown. The rest, I don’t know what to say, except hundreds of people still read it. Notice, tho AM radio and the WSJ focused on the Fair Trade issue, barely any time was spent on it and it passed unanimously.

SCRIPT ERROR
Several readers are reporting they are getting a script error with the new format on my blog, if you are one of those, if you can tell me what browser you are using it would be helpful. I have no idea what the problem is, works well for me in Firefox.

METEOR?
Huh, I saw that, I thought it was lightening, didn’t look closer. Bummer.

NEW LEAD PAINT RULES KICK IN
It’s about time. The builders association should quit their whining, they knew perfectly well this was coming.

HIGH TECH JOBS DOING WELL IN MADISON
I think we can cross that off our economic development list and start working on blue collar jobs for the area.

THIS SEEMS TO BE BETTER NEWS THAN I THOUGHT
Or maybe worse if you’re an affordable housing advocate. Just think, now we have more affordable housing, but no one can get loans. Soon, we’ll have less affordable housing and who knows, but many people still won’t be able to get loans.

WHERE’S THE OUTRAGE ABOUT UNELECTED OFFICIALS?
It’s been a local mantra between the RTA and the landmark’s commission, so, um, where are all the whiners now. Thanks to the Cap Times for writing this editorial.

GIGGLE
Funny Lukas. Ok, not so funny if you think about it. Actually, quite sad. Trip to Europe, ok. Scarf from the Dalai Lama, not ok, must give it back.

FOR ONCE A HEADLINE NAILS IT
Sales job indeed.

THANKS SAM
At first when I saw this was in the Badger Herald I thought it must be a joke, then I realized it wasn’t a Badger Herald editorial and it all made sense.

YES, NO, MAYBE
School Board tentatively down to a $12M gap, here’s how they got there.

NOW CAMPAIGN VIOLATIONS ARE TAKEN SERIOUSLY?
Last year the Chamber of Commerce had improper late conduit donations, at the time, the Disctrict Attorney’s Office had this to say at the time:

“This office does not have nearly the resources to pursue intentional violations of the law regularly referred here by police, and so we certainly lack resources to pursue accidental or inadvertent violations.”

I have no idea how he knew if the violations were intentional or unintentional, but he didn’t have the resources to investigate. Now that Clear has filed a complaint against the deputies, now we have a different answer from the office:
“We are going to have to have some assistance from outside” the office, he says, but adds that they will thoroughly investigate the matter.
The “he” in this case is Tim Verhoff, the prosecutor assigned to the case.

Don’t get me wrong, appreciate taking this seriously, but wonder why the double standard. I guess it’s ok when the violations are by the Chamber against Progressive Dane, but not ok when its against the Democrats? Or, perhaps its cuz Verhoff wants to run for District Attorney?

One might also ask, where are the Dane County Deputies reports on their spending for the billboards they put up in my race? I didn’t see Clear rushing forward with a complaint about that?

SPEAKING OF DOUBLE STANDARDS
John Nichols was way off base on this one as well:

No elected official in Dane County’s recent history has been the target of so aggressive a political assault as the one directed at Supervisor Brett Hulsey prior to last Tuesday’s election.

When I asked him about it, he agreed with me, I was indeed assaulted. Wouldn’t have been such an insult, but he lives in my district and it was only a year ago! The Madison Police spent $3,000 against me, and as noted above, the deputies didn’t file with the city. I never did the math on the other filings from the Chamber, Realtors and others cuz it kinda didn’t matter and it would just look like sour grapes, but I’m sure much more was spent in my race by outside interests to defeat me.
