The resolution includes “accepting” not “adopting” the Underrepresented Communities Intensive Survey Report as well, which includes a list of places to be considered as landmarks.Last December I blogged about the Historic Preservation Plan. I don’t believe much in the base plan has changed since then. However, the substitute resolution that the Council will be voting on Tuesday night includes “accepting the Underrepresented Communities Historic Resource Survey Report.” That I hadn’t looked at.
UNDERREPRESENTED COMMUNITIES HISTORIC RESOURCE SURVEY REPORT
It’s 243 pages. I skimmed through the entire thing. I learned a few things, knew some of it and some sections caught my eye more than others – mostly the buildings in or around my neighborhood that I have done research on in the past. Once upon a time I sat on the Landmarks Commission and tried to keep up with the resident experts! I am not an expert by far, but interested.
It’d be hard for me to summarize what is in there. It has information on African American, First Nations, Hmong, Latino, LGBTQ and women. They look at various aspects these populations influenced including government, architecture, education, social and political movements, religion, arts and literature, commerces, planning and landscape architecture and recreation and entertainment.
What I found most interesting, was in the appendix was a list of properties (some are redacted or crossed out I believe because the people are still living) that they think are eligible for landmark status. Check out the addresses to see what is in your neighborhood or what you might frequently pass by . . . did you know they were potential landmarks?
