Round Up Returns!

Tenant Resource Center (TRC) 30th anniversary fundraisers are done, TRC seminars are done, TRC awful budget options are done, Social Justice Center big event to unveil the Nan Cheney Community Room is done . . . now, more time for blogging. The round up returns! (Actually, one more event for TRC, the one year anniversary of our Milwaukee office. December 3rd, 5 – 7, Pabst Brewery.)

MEDIA RANT FROM THE CRANKY GUY
He has a point. I agree, and I’m not even that old!

STATE JOURNAL EDITORIAL MISSES A MAJOR POINT ABOUT THE MAYOR’S BUDGET
Yeah, its the Mayor’s budget. He chose the first $246,988,934 of expenses and raised the expenditures by about $7M over last year’s 239,828,661, what the council does to the operating budget is peanuts. And its his capital budget that has skyrocketed while he has been in office, increasing our debt service payments. Much of the increase is from that. Debt Service payments in 2009 = $25,979,820, in 2010 = 27,948,416 and 2011 = 29,824,712 I don’t know why the council gets all the blame for taxes . . . its the mayor’s office where it starts.

CAP TIMES WANTS FALK OUT
December 28th. Let the transition begin, they say. But who would be appointed?

HARLEY-DAVIDSON REJECTS $25M IN TAX CREDITS
Cuz they didn’t want to agree to he company had to agree employment and wage terms. How bad were they?

ALTERNATE SIDE PARKING STARTS TODAY
Yup – for those who don’t live downtown, watch where you park tonight. For those of us who live downtown, watch for new signs in some area, restricting parking on many mornings.

BARF
I don’t think I’ll ever be able to call the Villager Mall, “The Village on Park”. Sounds a little too pretentious.

TIF GONE BAD
Wow, here’s a big “I told you so” for Gromacki and those of us who voted against it. I’m mostly referring to Monroe Commons/Trader Joe’s. But there’s also Capital West and Hilton Hotel. Somewhere, I hear Gene Parks laughing.

WALKER SCREW-UPS
Wow, I thought it was just the voters that were uninformed, didn’t realize how sadly misinformed Walker was as well. Tho, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. Get briefed! And keep your mouth shut til you do.

LET THEM BE NUDE!
Hmmm . . . first case in the Naked Bike Ride dismissed. Next, the complaint against the officer for not letting her put her shirt on . . . ominous quote from Bill Lueders:

Dean is wisely “not optimistic” that the MPD’s internal probe will find the officer at fault. But she is looking forward to next year’s ride.

No kidding, does anyone think the police will think they did anything wrong?

STATE JOURNAL GOING DOWN
I take no delight in the subscription rates continuing to decline, because as they do, so does the quality of our news. They have a really great local city news reporter there . . . when he has time to do his job . . . I hope they don’t cut back even more. Remember folks, the editorial board and the news department are very separate, unlike at the Cap Times where it is sometimes hard to tell the difference between the news and the editorials.

WHAT TOOK SO LONG?
I don’t know why it took so long to deal with this . . . I continue to think that police work is needed, not shutting these places down. It is the only housing some people can get and they don’t need to be around this criminal activity either.

COUNTY BUDGET FINISHES TONIGHT
With some good news. And they kept the taxe increases at 2.9%

BUSINESS RECYCLING OPPORTUNITY
This is great, I wish they had this before the SJC treasurer, myself and my office manager had to dig 5,000 square feet of carpet squares out of a dumpster! Yeah, non-profit life . . . whatever it takes!

New Business Waste and Surplus Web Site Launched

The City of Madison and Dane County have launched a new web site designed to help area businesses make use of unneeded or surplus items. The Dane Business Surplus Center is an off shoot of the popular Madison Stuff Exchange web site.

“We saw a need to provide a waste and surplus exchange web site for area businesses,” Madison recycling coordinator said. “It is not on common for businesses to have good materials or equipment that they no longer need. The Dane Business Surplus Center is designed so that businesses can find someone who can put their unneeded items to work. This can save money for both parties and reduce the volume of material heading to the landfill.”

The Dane Business Surplus Center can be found at www.dcbusinesssurplus.com. There is no cost to register or to use the web site. The site is for use by businesses in the Dane County region. Businesses may not list for sale their products or services, only surplus or unwanted items, equipment or materials. Listings for live animals or hazardous or illegal materials and not allowed.

“We hope that the Dane Business Surplus Center will be as successful as the Madison Stuff Exchange,” Dreckmann said. “The Stuff Exchange has over 11,000 members and has kept over 2,600,000 pounds of material out of the landfill since it was established in 2004.”

The Madison Stuff Exchange, which is open to anyone who lives or works in Dane County can be found at www.madisonstuffexchange.com.
