Proposed County Human Services Cuts

On Friday, the County Department Budget proposals came out. And many non-profits "got the call". Here's some of the cuts that I've heard about so far.

Two More State St. Benches Removed

We're up to 12 now. Despite police testimony that removing the benches won't solve the problems, some confusion about if this was about homelessness or drug dealing or homelessness and no data to help them sort it out, the loss of many benches already, the committee voted unanimously to remove benches in front of Monday's (doesn't like the homeless) and Taco Bell (homeless and drugs) based on the testimony from downtown businesses.

GOOD NEWS! I think some policies have changed at the Porchlight Shelters

Call me cynical, but I don't really believe it. It seems like so many people have different understandings of what the shelter rules are and it appears there is a really good reason for that.

A Homeless Person Sums It Up

This email came to me this morning and I thought it was a good summary of where we are at. Not my words, but someone experiencing it. From his perspective, things look really bleak going in to winter. Not necessarily new, but the promise of change, the hope of things getting better . . . may have made things worse for many.
