On a vote of 4 - 2 (Paul Rusk, Andy Schauer, Maureen McCarville and Mike Willett voted no on approval. Leland Pan and Dorothy Krause voted yes) the Public Protection and Judiciary decided to let jail inmates continue to get paid $3.50 a DAY for an 8.5 hour shift. Criminal, right?

Even I was surprised when I walked out of the City-County Building last night, there were likely about 50 people sleeping out there, nearly doubling what it has been recently. And that number may grow. Makes the Occupy encampments start to look good.

They're hoping that Racine, Green Bay and others will join with Madison to preserve their local control. The ordinance passed (15-5) essentially levels...

It's a proposal that will be considered tonight at Personnel and Finance Committee at 5:15 in Room 354 of the City County Building. Currently, for a 8.5 shift, they are paid . . . $3.50 PER DAY, not per hour. Seriously.

Because right now policies and procedures are created by the police department without public input or oversight, approved by the police department without public input or oversight, changed by the police department without public input or oversight, and only modified if the police department wants to, without public input or oversight.
