MPD’s Constant Need for More Officers – Why I’d vote no tonight.

It seems the police are constantly shifting the ground under the policy makers about why they need more officers. And because the elected officials change all the time, they don't see the tactics that have taken place over time. Let this old timer explain . . . I've been fighting "more police" since 2001 and during that time they have added 94 more sworn officers. We've gone from 1.6 officers per 1000 in 1994 to 1.9 officers per 1000 in 2016. The budget has grown from about $35,000,000 to $70,000,000 in that time. When will it stop? There is always an excuse or a reason usually based on fear - let me run them down for you.

Madison Schools Week Ahead

2 meetings - Wednesday is the Police in the Schools Committee.

County Week Ahead

Real meeting times this week - 7am, 8:30am, 3:45, 1pm, 7:45 am, 9am, 2:30pm and 8:45. You can't make this shit up . . . that's about half the meetings during this short week. Zero regard for the public.

City Week Ahead

Short but busy week . . . back in the swing of things after the holidays!

Snow Emergency Tonight

That means alternate side parking for the downtown . . . and big tickets if you don't park correctly.

OIR Report on Policing in Madison (live-ish – final)

This is a summary of what I heard, but I recommend reviewing the powerpoint and watching it for yourself for the pieces I glossed over.

Messners – Are we targeting the right population?

So many questions about this project. And so few answers. The lack of county transparency once again is alarming.

Finance recommends 8 more officers – final vote on Tuesday

This is a brief recap - not very detailed. I'd suggest watching the video starting at 1:05 for public testimony and 1:28 for discussion - its about 50 minutes long if you watch just the discussion. Koval is combative as usual, particularly with Rummel but also in his atrocious use of language.

ACTION NEEDED: Messner Property Use for Affordable Housing (UPDATED)

What happened?!?!? The county's process for making decisions about who gets the RFPs really needs review. You've heard me say it before, but this time its insane! The county board passed a resolution (2016 RES-497) about a process - the process wasn't followed - including leaving out the alder and county board supervisor from the project area. There were 7 applicants, but we can't see their proposals (I'm working on it, but I don't even know who they all are) and again, it was announced as if its a done deal with no public input and as if it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. It's the county tho, so its not really a surprise.

ACTION NEEDED: 8 More Police Officers?

Dang - the city CAN move quickly if it wants to ram something through the process! Vote Tonight!

Madison Schools Week Ahead (Updated)

No legal notice posted for this week, its not attached . . . so I'm probably missing some meetings, but here are the bigger ones. Update: A school board member got me a draft document and gave me a link, but that link doesn't work for me, so I added the Nuestro Mundo, School Forest Advisory Board and the Advanced Learning Advisory Council - but they were marked DRAFT.

County Week Ahead

Meetings they don't want the public to attend at 2:30, 3:45, noon, 9am . . . seriously?
