City of Madison’s First Snow Emergency of the Winter

Big moneymaker! Move your car . . . the tickets are nasty!

PARK ON THE EVEN SIDE OF THE STREET TONIGHT

The City of Madison has declared a snow emergency.  That means that alternate side parking restrictions will be in effect throughout the entire City of Madison including the downtown/isthmus snow emergency zone.  Madison residents are asked to remove all vehicles from the street if possible.  Residents who must park on the street this evening should park on the EVEN house numbered side of the street.  Vehicles parked on the street Monday evening should be parked on the ODD house numbered side of the street.  Violations of the alternate side parking rules are punishable by a fine of $60 throughout the entire City of Madison.  Violators could also be towed.  The Snow Emergency will remain in effect until at least 7 a.m. on Tuesday February 3rd.  Residents are reminded that all daytime parking restrictions will be enforced.  That includes restrictions which ban parking on selected blocks in the Downtown/Isthmus area and on the near east and near west sides.  Parkers should pay attention to all parking signs.

Parking is available in the cashiered sections of City-owned ramps in the downtown area. During a declared Snow Emergency you can park for no charge at City ramps from 9 p.m. until 7 a.m.  If you enter before 9 p.m. or leave after 7 a.m. you are liable for any parking charges before 9 p.m. and from 7 a.m. until the time you leave.  When parking in the ramps overnight, do not park on the top level so this area can be plowed.  Be aware that vehicles stored in city ramps longer than 48 hours are subject to being ticketed and towed.  Meters in lots and ramps are enforced 24 hours per day, 7 days a week.  Free parking is also available at the Brittingham Park Shelter parking lot off of West Washington Avenue.

SNOW PLOWING UPDATE

The Streets Division has had 32 crews out working on our slat routes since 9 p.m.  We will continue to work on the salt routes until the snow stops at which time we will begin to plow residential streets.  We will be calling in contractors and other City agencies so that we will have approximately 150 crews working on residential streets in an effort to get them plowed prior to the Monday morning commute.

Our efforts are being hampered by low temperatures and windy conditions.  The temperatures have dropped to the point that salt is no longer effective.  We will be applying sand on hills, curves and intersections as needed.  However, given the continued snowfall and winds the sand will not have its usual benefits.

Windy conditions mean that snow is being blown back over streets that have been plowed.  Some main streets are in good winter driving condition but others are likely to remain snow covered and slippery for most of the day.  Drivers are urged to use caution and avoid unnecessary travel.

Complete snow emergency information is available at www.cityofmadison.com/winter or by calling (608) 261-9111.
