Correction: 15 units lost now, 11 long term

Yesterday’s blog about the Willy St. SRO was based on the knowledge I had at the time, here’s an update.

Well, first off, there were 15 units at the Willy St. SRO, not 16.  So I was off by 1.  Oops, sorry, couldn’t find a way to verify it online.

Apparently, the building is for sale.  For $1.5 million.

Historic commercial building located on desirable Willy Street, in the vibrant Marquette neighborhood. The main level is a mix of historic and modern office spaces while the second floor is single room occupancy, with the ability to be refurbished into larger, traditional apartment spaces. Positioned in the heart of a dynamic, trendsetting area, close to top-tier restaurants, eclectic shopping, and multiple entertainment venues, this property is promises to become an attractive asset for any investor. Property being sold in AS IS condition.

The listing includes 16 pictures of the outside of the building, 28 pictures of the offices,

and only 9 pictures of the units and common space.

Side note:  This building is called the Mills Brothers Building and apparently Orson Wells used to live next door on the “vacant lot” that had a “small frame house” that he lived in briefly in the 1910s.

OK – back on track.  This was the part I didn’t have quite pinned down until yesterday. Tellurian is seeking a grant amendment (so this isn’t a done deal yet) to replace this project with 4 scattered site units.  This will take “months, if not more.” to complete this transition from 15 single people being housed to 4 units of housing.

So the end result is – 15 units of housing will be replaced with 4 units of housing at a future date that is unknown, but not in the immediate future.

So – amending my unit loss count, we are at 19 – 23 units

But as I said, I have at least three more posts, a few units here, a few units there . . .and it adds up!  And it paints an ugly picture for the future of housing unhoused singles here in Madison.  More on Monday.
