Day Center Updates

It’s in front of two committees tonight meeting at the same time in different parts of town.

Not even sure where to start with updates, so this might be random.

WHAT’S HAPPENED SO FAR?
Neighborhood Meeting – didn’t blog it, its on facebook.

City-County Homeless Issues Committee – The group really struggled with this, with Alder Rummel and Brad Hinkfuss (works at Porchlight in leader in SASNYA) voting against. Everyone agreed that this process sucks and felt thrown under the bus by County Executive Joe Parisi. They spent most of their meeting talking about how to salvage the project now that it got off on a terrible foot with the neighborhood and if the site is even viable now. Oddly, only two neighbors showed up in opposition, 3 in support, 1 homeless person spoke in support. But the committee was well aware of the neighborhood sentiments, several of them were at the meeting. One homeless peorson on the committee left at the thought of this not moving forward after all these years. It was messy, thoughtful and heartbreaking as the committee realized what a mess this is. They did their best to try to fix things.

STEERING COMMITTEE SET UP

Neighbors,

We have a date for the first steering committee meeting.
October 29 at 5:30 in the Tenney Garden Apartment community room

That is 302 N. Baldwin St. County Planning and Development Director Todd Violante will join us and possibly Supervisor Jeff Pertl, Chair of Personnel & Finance Committee, as well as Heidi Wegleitner and Alder Zellers. The goal will be to provide more information and define the scope of the steering committee. If time allows, we can start to identify issues.

Here is a reminder about the County Meetings regarding Homeless Day Shelter. One was last week with more this week and next.

These meetings are open to the public and you may choose to attend those meeting to express your views.

  1. Remember when the County was rushing to push through a day shelter and many people were thrilled that a desperate need was finally being met, and many others were doing all they could to undermine the effort because they didn’t like the location? Now the people who were doing all they could to stop the last day shelter are demanding that this site is the only option and this must happen right now, we can’t wait another minute. A day shelter at this location will be the final step in making Tenney-Lapham Madison’s homeless dumping ground, and Brenda and Heidi are the ones throwing our neighborhood under the bus, again.

  2. I believ3, as I wrote in the city of madison.com comments on this subject, that the messier building is a good l9cation, bur that a second l9catipn, near the edge of town, such as post road, whete there is a warehouse building for sale, including some office space area, a total of 24,000 square feet, is good to keep in the plans. It is a good outlet to reduce crowding and gives needed respite, being surrounded by nature conservation parks. It could be there to recover, get away from the stress and expectations that go on, and might include some artsy sort of activities, to ease the tension and keep the peace. There might also be space designated at night in both locations, if it’s okay that I add that thought, especially for the sake that the single women’s shelter typically ovrrloads, and, when there are k8ckouts, the outer city location can already have taken on some of the load of overload, and the E Washington location will always have some space. With opportunities to findraise, (you’d be surprized at how many madisonions that are homeless, are also talented),the Lapham neighborhood not only doesn’t have to feel like they are taking on all of the homelessness problems, but what is there will exist in more peace.
