Union Cab and Badger Cab Join Forces for Democracy
March 29, 2011–Madison, WI. Last week, Union Cab of Madison Co-operative’s Board of Directors has authorized free rides to and from Madison, WI polling places on April 5, 2011. Today, Badger Cab, Madison’s oldest cab company, has decided to join with Union Cab and also provide free rides. Tom Royston, of Badger Cab, noted that “Badger has been part of the Madison community for over 65 years and is happy to support our community by helping people get to the polls.”
Polls open at 7:00 am and will remain open until 8:00 pm. Union and Badger ask people interested in using a cab to access the polls to set up appointments with our dispatch offices prior to Election Day. To ensure that people can successfully get people to the polls, the cab companies strongly encourages people to call before 7:30 p.m. in Madison and 7:00 pm in outlying communities. Union Cab and Badger Cab Co. will not guarantee service after 7:30 pm. Please vote early.
To find out where to vote, people should use the City of Madison Clerk’s office at http://www.cityofmadison.com/election/voter/Where.cfm.
People who need transportation will only need to call 242-2000 or 256-5566. Rides will be provided between a person’s polling place and their home address. Union Cab may utilize a share-ride method to maximize efficiency. The two companies will provide rides to people in Madison and the following connecting municipalities:
· Middleton
· Monona
· Shorewood
· Town of Madison
· Town of Blooming Grove (segments within Madison)
· Town of Burke (segments within Madison)
· Maple Bluff
· Fitchburg (north of Lacy Rd)
“While we are happy to offer this service to everyone,” stated Union Cab Marketing Manager John McNamara, “we especially want to help people who have difficulty accessing their polling place because of mobility issues or distance from their home.” Tom Royston of Badger Cab Co. added that he “hopes people lacking a viable means of transportation will take advantage of this opportunity to get out and vote.”
Due to public requests, Union Cab has created a site for people to donate funds, if they wish to help Union Cab and Badger Cab with this effort at Democracy In Motion Project
Union Cab and Badger Cab call upon the other transportation companies in the metropolitan area to join them in helping people exercise their voting rights.
