I didn’t even know this was an option, probably a budget saving measure for the Mayor’s budget, which he’s first handing out instructions next Tuesday. And the staff will have about a month to come up with a budget that is in compliance.
Here’s a letter from the employees of the parking ramp explaining why they are needed. I think they missed a big one. Safety. Having a human in the parking ramp that is visible and expected to be there is a key to making the ramps something more than a wasteland. I know that is the job of security, and being union employees probably couldn’t mention it cuz its not their job. But, knowing its an attended parking ramp gives you a different feeling than knowing no one will be around unless the security is making their rounds at the moment you are there.
Also, this reminds me of Janet Piraino’s comments at CCOC about the downtown train station, can you imagine no one there to sell tickets? Just a machine. It’s one of the options.
