September 13th . . . the Legislature goes back into session. There are two rallies planned for that evening. We’re starting to hear what’s on the agenda, here’s a little taste of the treats they have in store for us!
Thanks to the Mayor’s office for this list of items they thought alders should be aware of as of yesterday morning. I’m sure more is on the way . . . brace yourself. This is my summary of their summary, so not a direct quote.
Generally
• Change of the presidential primary day to the day of spring elections.• Landlord preemption bill is expected to clear the assembly this month.
A feww bills of interest:
• AB 173 – is a bill modeled on Arizona’s 1070. Briefly – whenever a person is arrested for/charged with a crime or civil violation, the bill requires law enforcement to check whether the person is lawfully in the state if the officer has reasonable suspicion that the person is not lawfully present. Officers may not consider race, color or national origin. Failure to provide ID at the time of arrest/charge can give rise to reasonable suspicion. City is preempted in any effort to thwart. Any private citizen may sue a political subdivision that is not complying – $500 for each day of noncompliance. Mayor has written a letter in opposition and is introducing a resolution in opposition.• SB 157 – redistricting to be done by Legislative Reference bureau and Governmental Accountability Board
• AB 222 bill to require proof of citizenship to receive public assistance.
• Rep Pocan and Sen Larson are circulating a bill to restore the recycling funds
• Rep. Mason is circulating draft legislation to raise the state’s minimum wage and to eliminate the current prohibition on city, village, town or county ordinances that establish a higher minimum wage.
I’m sure there is more coming . . .
