Re: Overflow Emergency Family Shelter

The Salvation Army of Dane County operates the only emergency family shelter in Dane County. The capacity is 18 people (about 3-5 families) each night. The need for emergency shelter is growing in our community and as a result we cannot accommodate all families in need due to not having enough space.

Starting Monday, April 4, 2016, The Salvation Army is able to use space at First United Methodist Church located at 203 Wisconsin Avenue for an overflow emergency family shelter.

The overflow shelter will be available this year Sunday-Thursday from April 4- October 31 from 7pm-8am. Porchlight uses the same space the other times of the year as an overflow shelter for men experiencing homelessness.

Intake procedure will not change when the overflow family shelter is in operation.
– Families who need shelter for the night must call the Housing Resource Line (toll-free; option #3) before noon that day to express need.
– If families do not have a phone they can stop by The Salvation
Army before noon to get on the list.
– Call-backs to families begin at noon each day.

At this time, due to budget restraints, we will not be able to provide meals to families staying at First United Methodist Church. Staff will direct families to free meal sites in the community.

We are very thankful to First United Methodist Church for offering up their space to families in need. Special thanks to Karen Andro for her role in making this happen and for her ongoing support.

Please let me know if there are any questions,
