BUS AVAILABLE TO PROTEST AGAINST ICE AND AMAZON ON SUNDAY OCTOBER 13 IN CHICAGO

Join us on Sunday, October 13 to stand up for immigrant justice.  We will be traveling by bus from Madison to Chicago to join other nonprofit organizations to protest against the policies of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)  and Amazon, which makes tens of millions of dollars developing technical support, like facial recognition, for ICE. Bus tickets are $20 per person, with sliding scale donations accepted. We plan to leave Madison at 9 a.m. and return by 8 p.m. For more information on joining the Coalition or for tickets to the Oct. 13 Day of Action in Chicago contact us at ccccMadisonwi@gmail.com.
The Coalition to Close the Concentration Camps calls for the immediate closure of all detention centers, open-air camps which are basically dirt floors surrounded by fences and barbed wire, for-profit prisons and so-called “shelters” that hold children who have been separated from their families at the border. We support the rights of all asylum seekers, refugees, and migrants who wish to enter the country.

DOGS AND MADISON PARKS

Board of Park Commissioners

The Board of Park Commissioners will consider the policies and guidelines for on-leash dog access in City of Madison parks on October 2, 2019.

FREE SKOOL DISCUSSION SERIES

Mon. Sept. 30th 6:30 pm Mutual Aid Workspace, Social Justice Center (1202 Willliamson St.)Radical Utopias – Imagined, Real & Potential – Kickoff Session of the Fall 2019 Madison Free Skool Discussion Series! Future sessions held alt. Mondays: 10/14; 10/28; 11/11; 11/25; and12/5.

Climate chaos and mass extinction got you down? Tired of social oppression and state terrorism? Well, to quote the famous Indian writer/activist Arundhati Roy, “Another world is not only possible, she is on her way. On a quiet day, I can hear her breathing..” For millennia, people have created societies of their own choosing – from pirate communes, quilombos, and the Civil War era Free State of Jones to today’s eco-municipalities, temporary autonomous zones (think Oaxaca, Standing Rock, or Rojava) and longtime anarchist communities like Christiania in Denmark. If the proverbial crap hits the fan, could Madison transform itself into a self-sufficient intentional cooperative safespace or would we become just another Mad Max episode in humanity’s social devolution?

Join us as we discuss the power of utopia in light of our current crisis! What can learn from great philosophers, historical examples, sci-fi writers? What viable contemporary models can we draw upon to prepare ourselves for a worst-case scenario? Is talking about utopia a good way to get outside of one’s own box and empower others – or just a waste of time? The Madison Free Skool is a participatory learning experience, so we hope you will bring your own ideas to contribute! Suggested readings will be provided for subsequent sessions (donations welcome to help defray printing costs). Hopefully folks can join us on a regular basis, but one can also drop in or out as time permits. There will also be an informal potluck before each session at 6:00 pm – feel free to bring a dish/snack/drink to share if you can. More info, check out the Facebook event:https://www.facebook.com/events/478177126352569/

SCIENCE ON TAP: PFAS – FOREVER CHEMICALS IN WISCONSIN WATERS

Wed. Oct. 2nd 7:00 pm The Winnebago (2262 Winnebago St.) Science on Tap: PFAS – Forevere Chemical in Wisconsin’s Waters!PFAS refers to a family of thousands of chemicals manufactured to make (among other things) waterproof clothing and non-stick cookware. These “forever chemicals” don’t break down in the environment and are associated with numerous health risks. They’ve been in the news a lot lately as they keep turning up in drinking water wells and municipal water supplies. Hear about current research at the UW-Madison and current efforts at the Wisconsin DNR to address the threat of PFAS contamination with speakers: Christy Remucal – Aquatic Chemistry Lab, dept. of Civil & Environmental Engineering, UW-Madison and Mike Shupryt – Bureau of Water Quality, Wisconsin Dept. of Natural Resources.
