I Suck Round Up

Sigh, I suck. Sorry, here’s my attempts to get back to doing this . . . some older things might get snuck in for the rest of the week as I catch up . . .

ICE
Well, if the Sheriff won’t change his policy, at least when people get taken away, there is now a way to find where they went to. I wonder if people would be too afraid to use it in case the information is tracked?

THIS IS A FUNNY CAST OF CHARACTERS
What could pit the following people against each other:
Salvation Army vs the lower income neighborhood they are located by.
Tripp Widder vs. Greg Rice at Executive Managment Inc.
Salvation Army fights for McDonald’s, Tripp Widder fighting for the library. Wow. Which do you think will better serve low income residents of the area? And are a few sodas and probably the same number of jobs really worth what it does to the neighborhood residents?

WOW, AT LEAST TRAFFIC WASN’T AFFECTED
Check out the last line here. Also printed below in case they change it for some reason. 🙂

Six arrested after disturbance on Williamson Street
Posted: Jul 27, 2010 5:52 PM CDT Tuesday, July 27, 2010 6:52 PM EST

MADISON (WKOW) — Police officers detained six people after a disturbance on Williamson Street Tuesday night.

According to Sgt. Kelly Donahue, someone called 911 to report a possible suspect with a gun creating a commotion outside a home.

When officers arrived, they detained six people, but did not recover a weapon.

Sgt. Donahue says one person is still unaccounted for, but is not believed to be a threat to the public.

Traffic was not affected.

Why is this even a story? Seems bizarre.

COUNTER RALLY BIGGER THAN RALLY
Hmmm, funny when the counter event gets even more coverage than the event itself. Why bother? Based on the call in to WORT while we were doing the show and talking with Megin, and everything I read, the main event was the counter rally.

WAY TO GO UW! . . . AHEM, ACTIVISTS
UW resists the activists for years and then takes the praise. eyeroll. Cap Times should have said the “UW did the right thing EVENTUALLY, got the right result EVENTUALLY.” It’s took years and hours and hours of activists time tilting at windmills to make it happen. Another mission impossible accomplished by those who were told it would never happen.

MATC SPENDAPALOOZA
Um yeah, $380M seems a little greedy. And risky. Perhaps they are taking most developers strategy and shooting for the moon so when it gets scaled back they still get what they want?

COUNTY BOARD TOO BIG?
The State Journal claims it “reduces the influence of individual members, costs taxpayer more in supervisor pay, and makes it harder to get things done.” But if you look at it another way, it gives the voters more opportunity to know their supervisor since they have smaller districts and have less constituents so they can devote time to constituent matters. It allows them to remain part-time positions and I’m guessing all the part-time pay is cheaper than a few professional board members. It adds to the diversity of voices. And, it helps fill all those committee assignments to they can look into the issues during committees instead of wasting board time. Plus, it gives the rural areas better service, because the bigger the area they have to serve, the less well they will know the area and serve it well. Less seats doesn’t seem to be the way to go.

GOOD THING I BLOGGED THIS
So they wrote this. So Jill could say this. I agree, I smell a TIF request, or some type of city assistance coming. Good thing I attend all the meeting that the reporters don’t so they can “phone it in” later.

KUDOS TO THE COUNTY
I was really confused when I went to do the county week ahead this week. I kept clicking on this link and trying to figure out why they didn’t update the link. Well . . . turns out, they did one better! They have a new page, that shows you meeting up to two weeks ahead, that is refreshed every day to keep the next two weeks coming. Not bad. I’m excited about this, and other website changes that are coming. I’m making my list of suggestions now to pass along in hopes that they will be included. There’s much room for improvement, and I appreciate the effort much!

WELL PLAYED
Someone an entire story about the police opening their new training facility, and not a mention of the cost over-runs and additional money it will cost the taxpayers. Damn. The public is sooooooo uniformed by our papers.

NEW ATC LINE LACROSSE TO MADISON
Let me guess, we have to do it, its economic development. Oh, wait, that wasn’t the communities line last time . . . hmmm . . . $425M is a ton of money. Interesting inconsistency from leadership.

RAW MILK IS DANGEROUS
When the cops come in with guns drawn. Seriously, was that necessary? It’s not Wisconsin, but caught on tape.

Ok – daily round ups should be back . . .

  1. Thank you for all the time you spend keeping us informed, Brenda. I’ve fallen behind in my reading the past few weeks, and I missed your post about the John Nolen Drive plan. I only noticed today that there are plans for a new Crowne Plaza in the area http://host.madison.com/wsj/business/article_f0382cee-92a2-11df-9e9e-001cc4c002e0.html
The developer claims no city assistance will be needed (to build the hotel), but what about the surrounding infrastructure? I wonder if the “grand vision” is related to this hotel development.
