Capitol Neighborhoods presents speaker John Norquist at Annual Meeting
MADISON – Capitol Neighborhoods, Inc. will hold its 2010 Annual Meeting on Thursday, June 24. The meeting will feature elections to the Executive Council and a presentation by former Milwaukee Mayor John Norquist, President and CEO of the Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU).
The mission of CNU is to develop an alternative to urban sprawl and the environmental and social problems it creates. CNU works to promote walkable, mixed-use neighborhood development, sustainable communities, and healthier living conditions.
John Norquist served as a Wisconsin Legislator before being elected as Mayor of Milwaukee in 1988. During his tenure as Mayor, Norquist oversaw a re-write of the city’s zoning code. He also worked to change the focus of development to the walkability of Milwaukee, most notably on a 3.1 mile Riverwalk project along the Milwaukee River. He received much acclaim for leading the way in removing nearly a mile of freeway in downtown Milwaukee clearing the way for major new pedestrian scale infill development.
