Consider me impressed! Yes, me, with something positive to say! 🙂 It happens more than you think.
Two smaller, lesser known departements at the city are working hard to make sure that no one is deprived of the right to vote due to the Voter Suppression Act.
CLERK’S OFFICE
The clerk’s office impressed me when I was at one of the budget discussions and they had left over brochures on the voter ID bill and what is means for people and how to obtain an ID. One of the staff people came up to me and asked if I would take the left overs back to my office. I did. I took half to one office at the Social Justice Center (1202 Williamson St.) and half another of our offices at the Dane County Job Center (1819 Aberg Ave.). And, it must have been a good call, because at least at the Social Justice Center, we ran out of two of them. I’m guessing they flew off the shelves, relatively speaking, at our office at the Job Center as well. People were definitely interested.
EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES DIVISION
Just as we were running out of brochures, a city staff person stopped by my office at the Social Justice Center to drop off their Fair Housing Brochures (good, because we only had the spanish ones left!) and with the materials they generally give us, they had more of the brochures about how to get an ID, which were the ones we had run out of. Because I talked to the person who came in, I asked them what was up. I was pleasantly surprised that this was on their radar screen in this kind of way. They explained that they really just wanted to make sure that everyone who wants to vote is given the opportunity!
