Leaf Collection started yesterday and the sad dead trees on the Isthmus list.
LEAVES
The City of Madison will begin the annual Fall Leaf Collection on Monday, October 6th. The Streets Division will continue to collect leaves as long as the weather permits through late November and early December.
Again this year, there will be no leaf collection schedule. Streets Division crews will begin collecting leaves in Monday’s refuse collection districts. After completing collection in Monday’s area, crews will move into the Tuesday districts, then Wednesday’s districts, followed by the Thursday and then Friday refuse districts. Upon completion of Friday’s refuse district, crews will begin the cycle again in Monday’s district.
“We always start leaf collection the first Monday in October because many residents want to get started cleaning out their gardens,” Madison recycling coordinator George Dreckmann said. “We will operate with fewer crews until the volume of material picks up in mid to late October.”
It is difficult to predict when leaf collection crews will be in a given area due to the uncertainty of workloads. The Streets Division has several options you can use to get the latest information on where our crews are working and when we hope to get to a given area.
You can get our best information from our web site www.cityofmadison.com/streets. You can also call our 24-hour information line at 267-2088. This number will provide you with a recorded announcement 24 hours a day. You can get the latest leaf collection update as well as information on brush collection and the yard waste drop off sites.
In addition to using our collection service, Madison residents can bring their leaves to any of the three yard waste drop off sites. The sites are open Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. On Tuesday and Thursday the sites are open from 8:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. The yard waste sites are located at 1501 W. Badger Rd on the south side, 4602 Sycamore Ave. on the east side and 402 South Point Rd. on the west side.
TREES
Alders Verveer, Zellers, Rummel, & Resnick:
Forestry recently completed a dead/dying tree survey in our Tree District #1 (Isthmus area), which includes portions of each of your Alder Districts. The list of locations and trees is attached. We had been noticing a lot of trees that were 100% dead towards the end of the summer and decided to make a sweep through the isthmus as we have often found that dead/dying trees are not called in to us by property owners in student housing and commercial areas.
When we do a dead/dying tree survey we look for trees that are at least 50% dead, these are trees that will be completely dead sooner than later and the dead portions of the tree can start deteriorating and falling. There are a lot of trees on this list – 155, we are seeing similar dieback across the city due to the drought periods in 2012 & 2013, and the harsh winter this past year.
For most of these trees the replacement timeframe will be fall of 2015 or spring of 2016. For any of the larger trees we will need to wait until Streets grinds the stumps – they will be shutting down their stump grinding operations soon for the leaf pick up season, so they will not be completed until next summer. There may be instances where trees can be replaced in spring of 2015 if the new planting site can be moved away from the existing stump, or if it is a small tree and we can pull the roots out of the ground.
We would like to start moving ahead with these tree removals next week, we have several other areas across the City where we are also surveying for dead trees.
