Long Council Night Hangover Round Up

I didn’t get home til 1:15, and I didn’t go to the bar after the meeting! . . . so I have a lot of blogging to do today, luckily I’m. working 10 hours on Saturday, so I have a few hours to burn this morning. Here’s the news I find of interest from the last day.

SHOWING ORDINANCE DELAYED
6 different versions in a year and its still not right, Verveer offers to try to help fix the ordinance by October 19th. Here’s the Cardinal coverage. And the Badger Herald. Watch for blogs later today for more details. Grumpy Grandpa Weis was very entertaining, and there were a few other good moments

THE SCUM ROUND UP
Glad Lukas did it, so I didn’t have to, this Kratz guy is unbelievably awful. Even the State Journal gets it and calls for overhaul of lawyer review process, calls for more transparency and teeth. I think the transparency part is most crucial. Emily Mills writes more on the Kratz issue.

EDGEWATER TIF DISTRICT APPROVED
This was the only coverage I found. Watch my blog for more later today.

DOWNTOWN ALCOHOL DENSITY ORDINANCE BOUNDARIES NOT LIKELY TO EXPAND
At least according to the Badger Herald and Daily Cardinal.

NEW LAKESHORE DORM
News thanks to the Cardinal.

HIGH SPEED RAIL MEETING
This was the only coverage I found on this meeting. Thanks to the student papers for covering all these items!

STILL QUESTIONING MONONA TERRACE AS TRAIN STATION SITE
Probably a lost cause . . . for now . . . maybe when phase two . . . trains to Twin Cities . . .

MORE OLD NEWS
Overture costs $19M in 15 years. I blogged about it here.

OK, THIS IS WHACK!
Did you just notice that . . . the students newspapers covered all kinds of news, that has no coverage from the State Journal and Cap Times . . . and the State Journal and Cap Times spend time on old news. Frustrating.

CITY KEEPS AAA BOND RATING
Good news, to be sure. I blogged about it here.

MISLEADING HEADLINE
The State Journal claims . . . . ‘”Madison may require homeowners to clear bus stops to aid disabled riders” . . . problem is, that is highly unlikely. If they listened to the discussion, many alders said this is the city’s responsibility and they need to just put the money in the budget. Schmuacher even blamed the Mayor for poor management and I think most knew this should have never gotten to this point, but it was a sense of frustration after not having the issue dealt with for several years. Watch for blogs later today for more details.

COVERAGE OF PARK IT!
I wonder how many people noticed this.

DID WOODMANS FIRE A PREGNANT WOMAN?
For being pregnant?

CITY TO BUY UNION CORNERS
What are they going to do with it? I blogged it here, but keep coming up with new questions. The resolution doesn’t help much, and worries me more when it says “the disposal of the Properties shall be by direct sale or through a Request for Proposals process once the site review analysis and a redevelopment
plan are completed.” I think there HAS TO be a request for proposals and I wonder if we’re going to have to hire someone to write that too since we can’t handle all our work. And who’s doing the redevelopment plan? George Austin?

DOWNTOWN PLAN
Meeting tomorrow night, Isthmus does a bit of a preview. Meeting is 5:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, in the Overture Center’s Promenade Hall.

WALKABOUT AT TROY GARDENS

Madison arborist and author R. Bruce Allison will lead an hour-long walkabout through the natural areas at Troy Gardens on on Sunday, October 3 at 10:00 a.m. Dr. Allison will share tree stories, encourage stewardship of natural resources and discuss threats to our forests such as Emerald Ash borer (EAB).

Emerald Ash Borer is a deadly pest insect affecting all ash trees and is moving toward our area. Homeowners and community members are encouraged to learn about trees, support urban forests and discuss EAB strategies.

Dr. Allison holds a masters of science in forestry and a PhD in land resources from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is the author of several books and articles about trees, the most recent being a revision of “Wisconsin’s Champion Trees: A Tree Hunter’s Guide” and “Every Root an Anchor: Wisconsin’s Famous and Historic Trees.”

Please gather at the yellow shed at Troy Gardens, along the 500 block of Troy Drive. All ages are welcome. Coffee and treats will be provided.

The Troy Gardens Walkabout is sponsored by Community GroundWorks and is funded in part by an urban forestry grant from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Forestry Program.

BUS ADVOCATES MEETING
This Thursday Sept. 23 6-8 p.m. in the UW Memorial Union (800 Langdon St.) Bill Schaefer of the Transportation Planning Board (Madison Area MPO) will be talking about transit planning in this area, including the RTA and the new 5-year Transit Development Plan. This is the annual meeting of the Madison Area Bus Advocates, co-sponsored with the Undergraduate Urban Planning Organization.

Schaefer’s PowerPoint talk will be followed by an open discussion. Bring you questions. Wonder how Fitchburg, Middleton, Sun Prairie or other places outside Madison but in the RTA area fit in the plans? Curious about all the referendums? How IS the RTA’s Transit Plan related to Commuter Rail? How does Metro have the authority to remove bus stops? Why don’t buses run in Sun Prairie or Monona? Why don’t the
University bus stops have schedule information? What IS the Federal “New Starts” program.
