…The Madison/Dane County King Coalition has announced that civil rights history maker Charlayne Hunter-Gault will visit Madison to serve as keynote speaker for the 26th Annual City-County King Holiday Observance on Monday, January 17, 6:00 p.m., at the Overture Center Capital Theater. The event is free and open to the public.

King Coalition Co-Chair Dr. Gloria Hawkins noted that “The Coalition is extremely excited by Ms. Hunter-Gault’s visit to Madison. We had the good fortune of learning that Ms. Gault was already planning a trip to The States from South Africa and was willing to make an extra stop in Madison.”

She has since earned acclaim in her career as an award-winning journalist both on television and in print. She is known for her work in Johannesburg, South Africa as National Public Radio’s chief correspondent in Africa and later for her work as CNN’s Johannesburg bureau chief. Her awards are numerous, including two Emmys and a Peabody for her work on Apartheid’s People, a NewsHour series on South Africa. She is author of In My Place, a memoir about her experiences at the University of Georgia and is currently working on a first-person memoir detailing the struggle of African Americans in the 1960s.

In addition to the keynote address, the event will feature the presentation of the annual City/County Dr. King Awards presented by Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz and Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk.

Music will be provided by the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Choir led by noted local music directors Leotha Stanley and Letrice Stanley. 1. Let us not forget that Dr. King visited Memphis to support the sanitation workers’ strike. Dr. King STRONGLY supported public service workers basic and fundamental right to a union, to decent pay and benefits, and to fair treatment on the job and in the community. He was in Memphis for the visit to support the sanitation workers’ union strike as part of his Poor Peoples’ Campaign to unite labor, the poor, and working class people as a cross-racial movement for social and economic justice. Dr. King fought for public employee unions as a necessary social and economic right, just the same as for civil rights, and was assassination because of it.
