Maxwell John Love: On the Budget and the UW

1. Budget “despair” bill

We’ll be at the Capitol until this is over. Right now there is a lot of misinformation and perhaps many undergraduates may not understand what is going on and why their TAs are holding teachouts and why classes are being cancelled.

  • The Democrats did not “flee” they are supporting us as we support them.

2. UW System University of Madison Breakoff

The Chancellor sent a secret memo to the Department of Administration (http://thecampusfirst.wordpress.com/2011/02/16/revelations-the-cloak-has-been-lifted/) check it out on Associated Students of Madison blog. Basically the Chancellor has been keeping her plans pretty quiet (no surprises) but she wants to split Madison from the rest of the schools so we’d have our own Board of Trustees. Coincidentally Virgina model (http://www.milwaukeenewsbuzz.com/?p=474945) is failing.

3. 20% Tuition Increase

We will most likely face a 20% tuition hike over the next two years, once again coincidentally matching up with the “mid point of our peers”.

Editor’s Note – See this Madison.com article for more information: UW-Madison could see hefty tuition increase because of budget cuts

  1. Even without the NBP going through, don’t you think the cuts from the state and the tuition rising is going to happen anyway?

I just don’t want it to be painted that tuition is rising BECAUSE of the NBP; it’s rising because the Governor won’t fund us as we should be funded and need to make up that shortfall.

  2. But isn’t there a danger that the NBP will make UW-Madison less accessible to the majority people in Wisconsin?

I mean, I get the worry about the people in power at the moment, but I worry about the long term too.
