Metcalfe’s Union Busting

This is frustrating, remember the cool project everyone loved on E. Washington and how great everyone thought Metcalfe’s was, or next time you bite into a brat at Brafest . . . well think again.

Workers at Metcalfe’s Need Your Support

After years of stable and mutually successful labor relations, Metcalfe’s Market has hired the most anti-worker law firm in the state to attack their meat department workers who are fighting for a fair contract. These workers are proud members of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1473 and deserve a fair wage and benefit package.

The reason for the attack is simple: GREED. The company is willing to spend unlimited amounts on union-busting lawyers to silence their workers instead of bargaining in good faith with their employees. The Company has even unilaterally implemented a 600% cost increase to employees in health insurance premiums alone!

Click here to send a message to Tim and Kevin Metcalfe. Encourage them to respect their workers and stop their intimidation tactics.

Last June, meat department workers at Metcalfe Market’s newly acquired store in Madison voted for union representation. These employees are fighting for their first contract and need our support.

These union-busting tactics will not silence the voices of workers. Let’s join together in solidarity and support our brothers and sisters at Metcalfe’s Market. All workers deserve a family sustaining wage with good benefits which is achieved through collective bargaining.

Tell the Metcalfe family to stop the unnecessary legal games and get back to selling groceries in the successful business that their employees helped build.

Click here to let The Metcalfe family know that you want their destructive tactics aimed at silencing their workers to stop.

Thanks for making your voice heard!

  1. Who wrote the quoted text?

Which store is “Metcalfe Market’s newly acquired store”? Are we talking about the ex-Cub Foods in the West Towne Mall area?

Who is “the most anti-worker law firm in the state”? Not naming them is an odd omission.

What does it mean to “attack their meat department workers”? It appears that the meat department is already unionized, so it’s a bit late to try and block the union from forming. Are they trying to to break the union up, and if so how? Are they just negotiating extremely aggressively?

What is “a 600% cost increase” in actual dollars? A jump from $100 to $600 a month would be devastating. A jump from $10 to $60 a month would be amazingly affordable health care.

Would a company motivated by “GREED” be willing to spend “unlimited” money? There crosses a point where it’s cheaper to agree to the workers demands, or even to close the meat department, than to keep spending money to fight the union, even if your concern is that unions will spread throughout your stores.
