Midweek Morning Round Up

Two days in a row . . . I hope I’m back on track for daily updates!

ADD MORE POLICE?
The Cap Times thinks that . . . well, I’m not sure what they think. This was an odd editorial.

T Wall bashes Ron Johnson
This is just so fun to watch. Thanks to Barry Orton for continuing to point these things out!

RTA MEETING TODAY
More updates and informational presentations. And passing their by-laws. I wonder how you would find aopy of them.

EDGEWATER YES! NEW WATER UTILITY METERS, NO?
The Mayor has goofy priorities. This just seems odd, since so many have been working towards making them happen for so long. Plus, the reasons for doing it have been clear.

Heikkinen said the meters, which can be read via computer rather than by employees visiting each home, would speed up the utility’s billing process, allowing for bills to be mailed monthly instead of every six months. This, in turn, would improve the utility’s cash flow, Heikkinen said, and hasten the process of improving the agency’s financial situation.

Also, Heikkinen said, the automated meters would improve water conservation by allowing the utility to better inform customers of their water use.

NO COUNTY REFERENDUM ON RAIL
It makes sense because, well, the RTA isn’t just about rail, no matter what the wing-nuts say. I really was surprised to hear Scott McDonell say that for the referendums around the county, people should vote “no”. You can hear this and why and other things he had to say yesterday on A Public Affair that I hosted on WORT (89.9 FM) here.

LOOK AT THOSE ECONOMIC STATEMENT FORMS
It’s something I’ve known for a long, long time. The State Journal wants you to look at them at the state level, but where can you find them at the city and county level? The city tucks them away in 3 or 4 binders in the clerks office, filed alphabetically and the elected officials are all mixed in with the many city committee members. The only way to access them is to know where they are and what to ask for. It’d be awesome if they could match the state. At the county level, I know them have one, but I’ve never seen one. I’m guessing they do something similar.

GOOD QUESTION
It sort of drives my point home.

LAYING 57 PEOPLE OFF, WHY?
Does a sluggish economy and unemployment make you need less health care? Or seek health care less?

WHY IS THIS NEWS?
The State Journal sure uses its space for funny things . . . instead of news that impacts a wider range of Madison, Dane County and Wisconsin residents.

GIGGLE
Always fun to see someone more cynical than I. It’s a bit unfair . . . but makes a point nonetheless.

GEESE ISSUES IN TENNEY PARK?

Russ Hefty from Madison Parks has been directed to develop a goose management report for the Madison Park Commission. He is also considering a public meeting in late summer/early fall in the neighborhood, but he wants to assess level of interest in the issue.

He is first seeking neighborhood/individual input and perceptions from park users. Russ is interested in the following questions…

1. Are geese causing conflicts on paths or roads?
2. Are goose feces impacting park usage and activities?
3. Are they an issue along the water at Tenney Beach or Giddings Park?
4. Are they an issue in other areas of the park or along the river?
5. Would the neighbors like to see more or fewer geese? Or is the geese population just right?
6. Are geese more prevalent in the Tenney Park area at certain times of the year?
7. Do you think the geese population has been changing in Tenney over the past 5-10 years?

This is your opportunity to inform the report and help shape the Goose Management Policy. The policy will be heard before the Madison Park Commission this fall.

Contact Russ if you have any questions about this survey.

Thanks for your input.

WHAT WOULD YOU WALK ACROSS THE COUNTRY FOR?

This Friday, August 27, you are invited to come meet Laird and Robin Monahan, the two brothers who are marching across the country to protest the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision. They will be in Wisconsin for one day only, and participating in two events. You are invited to come to one or both.

The first event is a chance to hear from the Monahan brothers, and several other speakers (including Rev. Karen Gustafson and at least two candidates running for Spencer Black’s seat in the 77th Assembly District), about the need to amend the U.S. Constitution to establish that corporations are not people and money is not speech. The press will be present, and it would be really great to have a lot of us there to show them how important this issue is to us.

March of the Monahan brothers
Check out a video report from Lair and Robin Monahan’s recent visit to St. Louis, here:

The second event is a reception in honor of the Monahan brothers, and is a chance for you to chat with them one-on-one, and to meet and mingle with other locals who are concerned about this issue. Here are the details:
