So, sad blogging news.
Because SB466 passed, radically changing tenant-landlord law, I’m too swamped to blog and do many other things. I worked 12 hours this weekend after finding out Friday night around 6:30 that the law had passed. And that is going to have to be my priority for the rest of the month – the laws will go into effect April 2nd or before, depending upon when the governor signs the bill. He should sign it on Thursday, then likely the Secretary of State Lafollette will wait 10 days, and it goes into effect the next day. So, blogging will not cease entirely, but it maybe a little sparse until I get the law sorted out and figure chapter 704’s effect on ATCP 134 (state regulations that were written into 704) and the local Madison and Fitchburg laws. I still haven’t gotten official word from local municipal attorneys on the effects of SB107 that passed in November and went into effect December 21 changing a handful of Dane County, Madison and Fitchburg laws. So, I’m writing my own strike through versions of all the laws (704, 135, Dane County fair housing laws, City tenant landlord and fair housing laws and Fitchburg tenant landlord laws), then re-writing our website, then our brochures and our housing counselor training guides (State version and Dane County version), then retraining staff, then organizing statewide trainings, running around the state doing the trainings and re-writing the Apartment Management in Wisconsin book and finally writing the long overdue Tenants’ Rights in Wisconsin book. And, with classic bad timing, we have one of our two annual fundraisers on Friday.
Good news is that 2 new staff started last week, and one starts today. (Previously we were down to 2 full time and 3 part-time staff to run 3 offices.) Bad news is, I have to spend a lot of time training them and since they aren’t entirely up to speed yet, progress is a little slower than it might be in a few months. But at least I have some extra hands!
