We were alerted by a concerned park neighbor that someone was using James Madison Park and the lake shore for shooting paintballs this past weekend. This is not only disappointing, it is a violation of park rules to use paintball guns in parks. We are disappointed that this occurred, as it is nearly impossible to fully remove the remnants of this activity, especially given the weather conditions. Staff will evaluate if we can do more to clean up the area as the weather changes. In general, paintballs are considered non-toxic to humans. There is evidence, however, that if ingested by dogs in significant enough quantities that the paint can be hazardous to their health. We recommend that anyone walking their dog in this area take caution to avoid any of the impacted areas and not allow your leashed dog to interact with the paint residue. We do want to reiterate that this is not an acceptable activity in our parks as it has a negative impact on the environment. If anyone sees this type of activity occurring in a park, please contact the Park Rangers at 608-235-0448.
