WILLIAMSON ST CRUSHING TO RESUME AT UNION CORNERS
An update from Alder Rummel
FYI- this letter has gone out to nearby property owners and forwarded to other east side list serves.
MarshaJune 16, 2010
To: Property Owners and Residents near the Union Corners Property
Re: Concrete and Asphalt Recycling for the Williamson Street ProjectAs part of the Williamson St. reconstruction project, the City of Madison has required that the contractor, R.G. Huston Co., Inc, recycle all of the asphalt and concrete that is removed from the existing street. Due to space constraints on the project site and access requirements, the City has allowed the contractor to use the Union Corners property for the recycling operation. It is expected that over 25,000 tons of material will be recycled, and by using the Union Corners property, this will save approximately 23,000 miles of trucking.
In the previous letter sent to inform you of the recycling, it was noted that the crushing of the concrete and asphalt would take place in two phases of 4 days each, and the stockpiles of the material would remain on site to be used as needed for the construction. The first phase of the crushing has already been completed, and most of the material from the first phase has already been used back on the Williamson St. project site.
The construction of Williamson St. is being phased such that the blocks from Blount St. to Ingersoll St. will be completed prior to the start of the Willy St. Fair on September 16. To accommodate this construction phasing, it will be necessary to split the second phase of crushing into two phases lasting 2 days each. To continue to use recycled material on the site and to keep the project on schedule, the contractor will soon need more of the recycled material than what currently remains. It is expected that the first of these 2-day phases will be starting on Thursday, June 23, so the removed concrete and asphalt will likely start to be brought to the Union Corners property on Monday, June 20. The second of the 2-day phases will be taking place later this summer. The City will not allow for any additional phases of crushing beyond these two, 2-day phases.
The allowable hours of the crushing will be the same as the first phase, which are from 8:00am to 5:00pm, but trucks hauling the material to and from the Union Corners property may be arriving as early as 7:00am. The trucks will use the same routes as in the first phase, so they will be arriving at Union Corners using E. Washington Ave., and exiting on to Winnebago St., over to Milwaukee St., and then back on to E. Washington Ave. The contractor is still required to restore the Union Corners property once the site is not longer needed for the recycling.
