Nothing to do today?

Unlikely, I”m sure, but just in case, here’s a couple ideas . . .

Greetings!

Make Saturday a day of Northside festivity all day long. Start out at the Mallards/Pierece’s Kids Day, at NorthTowne Center. They’ve got food and fun galore planned from 10 am to 3 pm.

Then mosey down to Troy Gardens between 3 and 7 pm for the Savor the Summer Festival. This is an annual event put on by Community GroundWorks to showcase all the exciting things that happen at Troy Gardens and share the abundance with Northsiders.

There will be free food–several vegetable dishes created from produce donated by area community gardeners and prepared by a team led by Dale Matthews. And lots of ice cream donated by The Chocolate Shoppe.

Musical entertainment will be plentiful, from the Boys and Girls Club Blackstar Drumline to Maury Smith and Jet Carpenter.

There will lots of kids activities, thanks to St. Mary’s Hospital and award-winning local art kit company, Artterro. Balloon sculptors will be delighting old and young alike.

You can take a hayride around land, to see the farm, prairie, edible woodland, Kids’ Garden and the 330 community garden plots that make Community GroundWorks a special jewel in the Northside’s crown.

The door prizes alone are worth the trip. We’ll be drawing names from those who stop by the Northside Planning Council/Community GroundWorks table for $50 gift certificates from Benvenuto’s and The Green Owl restaurants, a $15 gift card from Pierce’s Market, four certificates for free open skate, including skate rental from Hartmeyer Ice Arena, two $10 gift certificates from Hamann Charcuterie, and two $10 gift certificates from one of the Northside’s newest businesses, V Nails.

You can purchase the best Savor the Summer Cookbook ever–with recipes and profiles of Northsiders along with an inspiring short story and coloring pages–for only $6 at the festival. Also on sale will be the new Community GroundWorks t-shirts, canvas tote bags and more.

Tell your friends and neighbors. Come on down to the 500 block of Troy Drive this Saturday, anytime between 3 and 7 pm for fun, free food and entertainment, the chance to win great door prizes and a homegrown celebration of Northside Pride.

The project recruits local businesses to participate in the day by donating a percentage of their sales to Madison Nonprofit Day.
