Organics Pilot Off To A Good Start
The Streets Division’s household organics collection pilot has been operating for three weeks. So far the 434 household participating in the pilot have diverted 18,160 pounds of material from the landfill.
“Our volunteer households are diverting 14 pounds of material per week for composting,” Madison recycling coordinator George Dreckmann said. “That may not sound like much, but when you consider that we serve 66,000 households we could potentially divert 924,000 pounds or 462 tons per week.”
”As the pilot goes forward we will be testing the feasibility of reducing the collection frequency of the nonorganic portion of the trash stream and analyzing the energy potential of the material we are collecting,” Dreckmann said. “We are also going to study the potential of diverting organic material from large generators such as grocery stores, institutions, and restaurants.”
