ATWOOD/WINNEBAGO BUSINESS ASSOCIATION FORMING

The business leaders in the Atwood Winnebago area have been working hard to start a business association. We have a set of bylaws and would like to make everyone aware of our next meeting where we will be voting on adopting those bylaws as we move to formalize this structure.

Our next meeting on 9/21 at 7 PM at the Goodman Community Center (149 Waubesa St) in the Evjue D Room or our Mezzanine (mezz is up a flight of stairs). If you are reading the EastSide News you will notice that the time is incorrect. I had to make a decision about three weeks before our last meeting so I made my best guess. We decided to change the time to see if we could gather a larger group. Pleas spread the word. We are encourage businesses in the area to join the listserv or send me the contact info and I can invite them to join at WinnAtBusniess-subscribe@yahoogroups.com .

RUSKIN ST. BLOG

I’d like to invite my neighbors in the Sherman neighborhood and other folks on the Northside to check out my new blog, Ruskin Street. It’s meant to spur discussion in a part of town that doesn’t always get a lot of visibility. The first topic is the City’s proposal to designate Ruskin as a bike boulevard.

Check out Ruskin Street at http://ruskinstreet.blogspot.com/. I look forward to some good conversation!

STARKWEATHER CREEK BIKE TRAIL RIDE TONIGHT

The Bike Fed is hosting a series of 3 neighborhood rides this fall to help people learn more about how to bicycle in Madison. This is the first of the three rides. We will not be taking the path past Aberg since it is still undergoing improvements. Please forward widely. Sorry for the last minute notice.

Discover the Starkweather Creek Path – a link to Madison’s east and north sides

Ever wonder how to get to East Town, to Shop Ko or some of the northside’s shopping centers from Madison’s east side by bike? It’s much easier than you think and it’s bike path almost all the way!

The Bike Fed and the Madison Police Department have teamed up to show how safe and easy bicycling is in Madison. Please join us for a free 1-hour Share & Be Aware bicycling safety tips presentation followed by a slow, safe, and easy neighborhood ride led by Madison Police officers. This is a great opportunity for those who are interested in biking more but have questions or concerns. You’ll learn how easy it is to travel by bike along Madison’s popular Starkweather Creek Path.

Wednesday, August 31
Goodman Community Center
6:00 – 7:00pm: Share & Be Aware Bicycling Safety Tips presentation
7:00 – 8:30pm: Slow ride on the Starkweather Creek path across East Washington and Aberg Avenue (if time permits we will bike to Ruskin Street, a proposed bicycle boulevard on the North Side)

Don’t forget your bike lights and helmet! If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Amanda White at amanda.white@bfw.org.

WEBSTER ST FIRE BENEFIT

Graze, 1 S. Pinckney St., U.S. Bank Building on the Square, Madison, WI

Free; no cover to peruse the fantastic wares and offerings! Meet new artists and craftsmen in the community. Discover new local businesses supporting their friends and neighbors. Check out the cache of vintage wonders available.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 18th, 6-10 p.m.

Doors will open at 6 pm; the Graze bar will be open from 6-10 p.m.

The Silent Auction will take place from 7-9 pm. (No fee or registration required to bid–please see details of the auction below.)

Winning bidders will be announced immediately following the close of the auction. The Raffle prizewinner will be drawn at 9:45 pm.

The gracious Graze bar will be open and will accept cash and charge. Thanks to Graze, beverage proceeds will be donated to the benefit. And please remember to tip our fabulous volunteer bartenders. 😉

HOW WILL THIS SILENT AUCTION BE RUN?
This will be a blind silent auction, meaning that you will not know what dollar amounts other bidders are bidding. Bids will be written on bid tickets and placed into bid receptacles next to each item. There will be a minimum starting bid placed on all items. You will be able to bid on any item by filling out a bid ticket with your name and your bid for the item. You may bid as many times as you wish before 9 pm. If you wish to increase your bid, simply fill out another bid ticket. 😉

At 9 pm, the bids will be counted and winners will be announced.

Winning bidders MUST BE PRESENT at the end of the auction TO PAY for their items upon announcement, via CASH or CHECK made out to “The Friends of the Webster Street Fire Victims,” and will be asked to TAKE THEIR ITEMS with them at the end of the event.

Raffle entrants, however, do NOT have to be present to win. If not present, the winner will be notified by phone or email and the raffle prize will be mailed or delivered.

WHAT WILL WE BE AUCTIONING?
A vast array of amazing vintage and new goods, gift certificates, and services have been donated for this auction including salon services, local artwork, mid-century barware, fine new, vintage, and custom-made clothing and accessories, photography services, and many local dining gift certificates.

A specific list of auction items (and photos) will be provided shortly…stay tuned.

WHAT WILL BE RAFFLED? A terrific bundle of gift certificates for local goods and services. Specifics to be announced shortly… 🙂

HOW WILL THIS FUNDRAISER HELP THOSE AFFECTED BY THE FIRE?
The tenants of the Capitol Hill Apartments whose homes and belongings have been destroyed and the employees and start-up business owners of the recently-launched-but-already-beloved businesses below, Underground Kitchen and Muse Independent Styling, need our help. A fund, “Friends of the Capitol Hill Apartment Residents and Employees of Underground Kitchen and Muse,” has been created through UWCU. The majority of donated funds will be distributed to tenants of the apartment building and employees of the destroyed businesses. A small portion of proceeds will be donated directly to the businesses to help them get back on their feet. Thank you for supporting Madison residents and small businesses!

Any questions? Want to donate some goods or services for this great cause or want to help in some other way (promoting, volunteering the day of, other ideas)? Please email Philippa Bergmann at pb.supercherie@gmail.com
