Whoa – another disturbing trend . . . want to participate in your local government? You need to be a paid lobbyist or not have a day job! Realistically, if you work til 5:00 you can’t get to a meeting before 5:30 and will miss or be late for 82.6% of the meetings this week. Perhaps its a little harsh to use that as a line in the sand, but even if we assume people can leave work at 3:30 and get to a 4:00 meeting, you’d still be missing out on 25% of the meetings. If you can get there til 4:30 you’d miss out on 49% of the meetings. If you can get there by 5:00, you’d only miss out on 74% of the meetings.
So what if you miss the first 10 or 15 minutes of the meeting – um, people, that’s when the public input is!!!! Some committees only take public input in the beginning of the meeting, others allow testimony at the time the item is taken up, but if you miss that, most committees won’t let you speak.
