Most people moved their cars last night, thinking it would be a snow emergency . . . now, if they don’t move, they’ll be towed. Makes me think of that Phish song, every time . . . . The clean version:
The tires are the things on your car
That make contact with the road
The car is the thing on the road
That takes you back to your abodeThe tires are the things on your car
That make contact with the road
Bummed is what you are
When you go out to your car and it’s been towed
SNOW PLOWING UPDATES
Hmmm . . . blizzard, just like last year, did they do any better?

City crews have been out salting and plowing the main arterials since the rain turned into snow Saturday afternoon. During the overnight hours, crews were then assigned to the 10 newly developed major arterial routes, which are streets that include University Ave., Mineral Point Rd., Johnson St., E. Washington Ave. and Hwy. 113 among others. By 6:00 am this morning, a total of 52 plow units were assigned back on our 30 salt routes to continue to plow and salt to try to get them as clear as possible before the temperature falls below 15 degrees. by noon today and salt can no longer be used.Crews will begin the plowing of all residential streets at 10 am this morning. At that time there will be approximately 175 pieces of equipment on the road. With the severity of the storm, from the heavy snow, the accumulations reaching close to 9″, the high winds and the dropping temperatures, it will take probably take until midnight to complete the plowing of all residential streets.
This storm is very similar to the December 8th and 9th blizzard from last year. The only major difference is the total snow amount. While we are not expecting to have our main streets ice packed like they were after last years storm, we are expecting them to have some snow on them until the temperatures do moderate later in the week.
We have declared a Snow Emergency for the next two nights. Alternate Side Parking restrictions will be in place throughout the entire City including the downtown Isthmus Snow Emergency Zone. If at all possible, find off street parking or at a minimum abide by alternate street parking rules. Check with the media, the Winter Hotline at 266-9111, or the winter website at www.cityofmadison.com/winter to sign up for text alerts, email notification or twitter alerts when a Snow Emergency is declared.
SNOW EMERGENCY
Here’s the notice sent by the city . . . makes me wonder, why can’t we park on the streets Thursdays and Fridays 8 – noon, I thought that was when they would plow to the curb where cars didn’t move, why are they towing, it costs the city more.
The City of Madison has declared a snow emergency. That means that alternate side parking restrictions will be in effect throughout the entire City of Madison including the downtown/isthmus snow emergency zone.
Madison residents are asked to remove all vehicles from the street if possible. Residents who must park on the street this evening should park on the ODD house numbered side of the street. Vehicles parked on the street Monday evening December13th should be parked on the EVENhouse numbered side of the street. Violations of the alternate side parking rules are punishable by a fine of $60 throughout the entire City of Madison. Violators could also be towed.
The Snow Emergency will remain in effect until at least 7 a.m. on Tuesday December 14th.
Parking is available in the cashiered sections of city-owned ramps in the downtown area. During a declared Snow Emergency you can park for no charge at the City ramps from 9 p.m. until 7 a.m. If you enter before 9 p.m. or leave after 7 a.m. you are liable for any parking charges before 9 p.m. and from 7 a.m. until the time you leave.
When parking in the ramps overnight, do not park on the top level so this area can be plowed. Be aware that vehicles stored in city ramps longer than 48 hours are subject to being ticketed and towed. Meters in lots and ramps are enforced 24 hours per day, 7 days a week.
Parking is also available at the Brittingham Park Shelter parking lot off of W. Washington AV.
