Post-Birthday Round Up (Part One)

I was slacking last week, lots to round up . . . so little time. This is all mostly not primary news sources, but other happenings.

RALLY/COUNTER-RALLY TOMORROW AT NOON
Seriously, they’re coming to Madison?

NOM is an anti-gay group that actively fights against same sex marriage by spreading lies. They are coming to town, so we need to meet them and how them that they picked the wrong city when they decided to come to Madison. Stand up for love, for equal rights. For more info on their marriage tour: http://www.marriagetour2010.com/index.html If you are not in Madison please check to see if they are coming to your town.

We would also like to rally when the decision in the Prop 8 case is announced. We do not know when this will be, but we do know it will be soon. We’ve created an event as an emergency response facilitator: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=101906006531383

We would love a nice long list of cosponsoring organizations around town, so if your group is interested in cosponsoring please contact an administrator of this event to let us know so we can put you on the list! All we ask in return is whatever you can do to help publicize and welcome you to organizing meetings! Thanks!

Job Announcement Details

I’m kinda curious, why the first 81 people were all rejected. Think they hand picked someone who missed the application deadline?

MARK CLEAR DEFENDS FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS
I missed the Cap Times article, but I did see this other one. Apparently, he thinks more research is needed to figure out if fast food is bad for you. Recommends you order the fruit cup or a salad (note: depending upon where you go, that might not be much healthier). Maybe we should make him watch Super Size Me. I think what Clear was really saying is “this would be anti-business” so we can’t do it.

WHAT IS THE HIGH SPEED RAIL MEETING ABOUT?
The station:

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) will be holding a public information meeting to discuss the Madison high-speed rail station. The discussion is scheduled for Thursday, July 29 from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at the Wisconsin Department of Administration building, 101 E. Wilson St., Madison.

The open house meeting will include information on the Madison station design options. Members of the WisDOT project team will be on hand to answer questions and discuss the station.

Please feel free to share the attached flyer with your constituents. If you need any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me. I also encourage you to sign up for WisDOT’s Wisconsin Rail listserv. You can do so by visiting www.wisconsinrail.gov.

Warmest regards,
Alyssa

Or the corridor:

Please note: WisDOT text has changed — From the postcard meeting announcement some neighbors received Wednesday -> to this email today.

The Wednesday postcard says “Station and corridor information” will be available July 29. However the email today says “station”–only — no mention of “corridor”.

These folks are masters at communications. Not to mention the fact that people got about a week’s notice for this meeting. Despite pleas from alders to have them plan further ahead, especially in the summer time.

HIGH SPEED RAIL AND RTA COLLIDE
RTA meeting cancelled, as I have noted before, but dang, this doesn’t say much for how the State is coordinating with us locally, does it?

Please see attached – – due to numerous scheduling conflicts, the July 29 RTA Board of Directors meeting is being cancelled….the next meeting of the RTA Board of Directors will be held:

– Wednesday, August 25, 5:00 p.m., Shorewood Hills Village Hall

Please feel free to call if you have any questions – – thank you and best regards, David T.

It also means referendum in fall? Not. going. to. happen.

TRAIN AND WILLY ST. COLLIDE
There are high speed rails meetings this week at the same time as this meeting:

The first public informational meeting for the 2011 Williamson Street project. It’s scheduled for Thursday, July 29 at 6:30pm at Research Products (130 S. Ingersoll).

HAVE AN OLD SET OF BINOCULARS?

Remember that old pair of binoculars sitting in the back of your closet gathering dust, behind the pile of purses or ties you never use? Well, our neighborhood children need those binoculars. Some of them are about to join 48 million other birders in the United States as they learn to practice the country’s fastest growing outdoor sport.

Starting in September and running through November, children at Sherman Middle School will join UW-Madison college student, every Monday, for a walking field trip to our neighborhood Warner Park, home to over 92 bird species. Together the college students and middle schoolers, paired up as “Bird Buddies,” will learn how to recognize 30 of Wisconsin’s most common birds.

Our kids are going to learn how to use binoculars, how to use their eyes and ears to identify birds, how to record biological field notes, how to draw bird territory maps, and even how to build a bird nest.
They’ll acquire the same focus of a falcon as it dive bombs its prey and the patienc e of a great blue heron as it stands stock still, waiting for that perfect fish. A dynamic combination of science and sports, birding turns the outdoors into a classroom and biology into fun.

The Brentwood Association has begun a binocular drive to donate 15 sets of binoculars to Sherman Middle School. We invite donations from any source. The binoculars will be loaned to children in the Bird Buddies program for the school year.

If you have a pair of binoculars and want to give a child supersonic eyes to see the ruffling of a great horned owl’s feathers, please contact Trish O’Kane at pokane@wisc.edu. Our children and our birds sincerely thank you for your support.
